Port forwards (not what your thinking pls read)

is there ANY possible way to not have to forward a port from my LinkSys router to my computer? My dad is *afraid* of the hackers getting in (no matter how much I tell him they wont). I was thinking that since I am able to direct connect on AIM and I am able to send and receive files on anything, why wouldnt I be able to use a port that I do all the file transfers on? Are there any ports that you know of that I could use in the DNAS Shoutcast Server?
I pray that there is a way! <-- i know its not praying but it looked like it haha
