Sticky: How And When To Resurrect/Direct Members To Old Threads; Guide

As Germ stated in his thread, we seem to have been overcome with forum Nazi's whose sole purpose on this board seems to be trying to tell members where their threads should go, and also to use the search feature. After seeing this over and over again, I have decided to write this guide on proper search/forum direction etiquette.

This thread should go in <this> forum, not here
When to use: This sort of post is best not used at all, but if you really feel it is necessary, use it only with new members who may not yet know their way around the boards yet. If this post is top be used, however, follow the following guide on how to make it something more than a "postcount++" post.
How to improve: Comment on the topic at hand. If, for example, the person is looking for comments on a new WA2 skin, and has stated the thread in the General Discussion forum, do not say only "This should be in WA2 Skins." Instead comment on the skin, then as a postscript suggest that future threads of this nature be posted in the correct forum.
example
Quote:
nice skin, i like the c-buttons a lot, but I don't think they really flow with the background. Overall it looks like it has potential, keep up the good work . btw, next time it would help if you posted in the WA2 SkinLove Forums, since it is a skin, and the people there know much more about skins, and will be able to give you much better comments/suggestion.
Been done already!/ Use the search feature!/Read the FAQ's!
When to use: Use only if the thread is some sort of legitimate question and it has been asked before.
example:
Quote:
How do I get my file associations back from RealPlayer?
That question has been asked and answered many times before. In this case, it is appropriate to recommend to the user to use the search feature in the future.
Again, that is the only time to use such a post. Too many times people post this sort of message if people begin a discussion/joke.
example1:
Quote:
Is there a God?
example2:
Quote:
Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!
Most members know that this question has been asked and discussed before, but that was then, this is now. Now there are newer members with new perspectives. There is absolutely no reason to bring back old arguments, especially if the majority of the members in the old thread are banned/left on their own free will. For example2, it may be an old joke, but some people may have not heard it. If you have heard it, that is fine, but is there really a point to showing the old thread? If you are told a joke that you have heard before, do you seek out the person who told you the joke? I hope now. Again, using this sort of post in either of these two examples is merely a semi-clever way of saying "postcount++".

This thread sucks! / This is shit
When to use: short answer: never. long answer: almost never. This is the third way to merely increase post count. Often this post contains only images. If you feel that the post is not worth reading, then by all means stop reading. Nobody is forcing anyone to read anything. All your postpumping does is clutter up the board. If you really want to help, report the post to a moderator. The only reason to post a post similar in nature to this is if the thread is clearly flame-bait, and/or you are attempting to calm the thread down. Of course, you should report the thread to a moderator, and let them take care of it.

If we all follow these simple suggestions the Winamp Forum experience will be greatly improved for all members.

Yes sir!

Sorry dlink, i think your heart was in the right place here, but i think it would have been better to talk to a moderator or administrator and ask them to post it. The way you've written that post makes it sound like you're laying down rules, instead asking people to follow an example.

Good point. I am also sure that there will be about 5 members who are digging through my old posts where I do just what I say not to.

HHMMmmm...I'm going to have to go with atmo on this. I don't know that the mods/admin would necessarily endorse the wording.

Just try to be good people, ok?

I was away for a while.
But I'm feeling much better now.

gonzo, feel free to delete this, and post a more "mod-friendly" wording of it. I am just tired of seeing "use he damn search feature" or "this shoudl go here" with no comment at all about the thread. So yea, if you feel like it, chop it up, fix it up, re-post, i have no problem with it.

All that we need to abide by has been codified here. (In other words... this has been done before. )

Feel free to find my last post doing anything mentioned here. I beleive the closet is the most recent WA5 thread where I say it should be locked because the questions have all been asked, and I say people should just wait for it to come out, and I predict a flame-war. Other than that, it has been awhile.

Saying that pixiefied was "digging through my old posts where I do just what I say not to" is kind of a stretch.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone quote themself in a post and say "good point" before, nor have I seen anyone think that putting "Sticky:" in their subject line would make the post stick anywhere. I know you've been begging to be made a mod for a while, but this isn't the way to go about it. Unfortunately your whole spiel comes across as being written by a... how did you put it?... "forum nazi."

You can condense the original post into 4 simple words:

Search before you post

wow, did you read any of the thread?

a) the quote i did of myself is where I say good point to atmp
b) no, it isn't really that big of a stretch
c) forum nazi, as Germ Stated in his thread, although I beleive he said ninja now that I am more awake.
d) I know it is not a sticky, but it still is fun to put in the title /shrug
d) STFU n00b!
e) who gives the fuck about modship? I am just sick and tired of watching these forums become a heaping pile of shit. There is a reason that you don't see many members from 2000 and 2001 around anymore. As for what I say in my first post, this should be common fucking sence. Who the fuck really cares if eight months ago somebody posted a thread to the same funny website? "Not I" said the dlink. Your not a god damned mod, so if you want a thread moved, PM a fucking mod. Does it really hurt that much if some new member posts a skin in GD, or a tech support in GD? Does it realy cause you so much physical pain that you feel compelled to chew the guy out about proper posting habbits? If it pains you that fucking much, IM or PM a mod, and leave it alone. The mod's will move it if it really causes that much of a problem. You all act like these forums are fucking sanctuaries and if a thread is in the wrong spot, god himself will come down and shit on your head. Get the fuck over it. OMG THERE IS A TECH SUPPORT QUESTION IN GD! QUICK! GET A MOD TO REMOVE THIS SIGN OF SATAN! Fuck. All I am trying to say, is that people need to get a fucking life. People like you, clowner, and pixiefied. So quick to judge the author, but you didn't take two seconds to try to even consider the message.

I think you really need to consider taking your own advice, ie you should have gotten a hold of a mod and legitimatized the post. Since this thread is just turning into a flame fest, I'm locking it.

I was away for a while.
But I'm feeling much better now.
