check it out
my daddy got a job...24 years ago. so did mommy. they went to c-o-l-l-e-g-e.
how do we manage to get by with 60k or so a year? to start, my parents had only as many kids as they could take care of (2), unlike most families in utah, and most minority (broad generalisation here) families in utah seem to do. we have three family vehicles (the newest being a 2003 truck with zero miles on it :P) plus one provided by daddy's work. somehow we get by actually sharing. strange eh? contrary to popular belief, it is possible to live in a nice house on our total income. and have a nice big plot of land to go with it. one time my daddy hurt his back at work and was on disability. his pride hurt so much he still beats me every day. i don't pay for gas. i ride the campus shuttle like a normal person. speaking of which, mommy and daddy are paying for my college and my brother's high school expenses. i help them by getting scholarships and paying for what i can. not being too moochy = good. and somehow mommy and daddy manage to fly places and go on vacation and see things and make new friends. i don't know how they do all that on a measely 60k..only in america. sweet revelation. |

You know if I made 60K/year, I'd consider myself a fucking rich ass. I am able to survive off of a 13k job, in a really messed up economy.

Your right LM. My dady didn't go to college at all. He just went up tot eh local nuculear power plant and asked if he coudl help design pipeing systems for him, and they said "sure, wy the hell not"
And amount of money peopel make doesn't matter as much as the cost of living also. 100K might be megabucks in a rural town in alabama, but is pennis to someone in beverly hills. Where I live, 75-120k a year is average. It is just where I live. can't blame me for that.

a) moving costs a lot
a2) the whole town is high cost of living. We actualyl live in one of the "poorer" sections of town. b) buying a new house costs a lto c) my mom works at a local elementary school, ie, a mile away, easy to get to d) moving would pull all of the children out of school, my parents dont want that. e) we were living off the necessaties. we stopped the newspaper, cut phone use down, stopped the cable, bought bulk, etc. |

...I know I probably don't have too much of a say-so here but, if my family was making 100k a year, i would have one of those 4500 top dollar PC's and i admit i am pretty spoiled but, it is pretty jacked up that you guys are saying its hard to live off of 60k a year and 100k.

i would -guess- that a computer card at the library costs less than a broadband internet connection. unless it's AOL broadband, but you're fucked anyway then ![]() anyway, dlink, your dad got a job. since you're obviously down and out, that is a great thing. congratulations on not being broke no mo'. |

broadband internet costs only 10 dollars since we also use them for a TV cable. Card at the library costs i think 2 dollars per person, you cannot use someone elses. Plus a dime per sheet of paper you print off b/w, 50 colour. Plus i think 1.5 if you want a transparency. One report @ the library costs a month's worth of broadband. Dialup cost even more because illinois is stupid and local calls cost money.

she only did it when we had no money to pay for our own. We buy our own now. Don't worry, she isn't a serial theif, but the shcool pays her shit (a new janitor makes more than here cause she is only a TA) so we di what we could to get teh job done. The principle knew about it too, he said it was ok becuase he knew of our situation, so in a sence, it really was borrowing.

for what it's worth, having a perfectly valid point of view and expressing it in a mildy sarcastic way, isn't flaming.

It's easy for people who don't pay mortgages and have never had to make that payment while unemployed to make fun, but the fact is, most everyone lives up to their level of income, no matter what it is. Perhaps one family is pulling in 100K a year, and another family is pulling in 60K a year. That doesn't mean that the family making more is socking away 40K a year. More likely they live in a bigger house and are making bigger payments on that house. People don't plan on losing their job, or at least most people don't. When you lose your job, the funny thing is that the bills keep coming, and they don't get any smaller.
Working at Burger King is not going to make up for the lost income, and you make think it's easy to get a job at Burger King, but I'll bet it's not. Why would they want to hire someone who is so ridiculously overqualified that they will most likely still be looking for a job and leave as soon as they get one. Not a good long term strategy for Burger King. Also, when you are unemployed, you need to devote yourself to hunting for another job, not flipping burgers. Unemployment payments are intended to allow a person to look for a new job - they aren't intended to cover a CEO for two weeks until he can get that busboy job at the local steakhouse. Also, you don't know what you are talking about if you are comparing unemployment payments with disability payments. Disability payments are usually some percentage of your usual wage, something like 75%. Unemployment payments are usually $300-$400 a week. That might sound like a lot to some, but if you have a $1700 mortgage to make, that eats up the whole thing. In other words, it's easy for the college student with a paid-for education to scoff, because that person hasn't dealt with the real world yet. Come back and talk to me after you are out of school, with a family to support, house payments, utility bills, grocery bills, car payments, etc. |
