Good analogy, you mean like Star Wars Episode 1&2 that came after 4,5 & 6 ?

Anyone tell me what the next word shall be?

Because Winamp 2 and Winamp3 are NOT different versions. They are different products all together. As I said before, Winamp 5 will not support Wasabi (initially) and some people like the Winamp3 interface better (different preference setup and shit).

So with the release of 5, I am assuming that that will mean the end of development for WA2, meaning that 2.91 is going to be the final official release of v2?

Yes and no
Winamp 5 is the direct upgrade from Winamp 2.9x
ie. Winamp 2.x development continues as Winamp 5

so here comes again the big missing part...why Winamp 2.x development continues as Winamp 5 and not as 4,if winamp3 is stand-alone product
that isn't gonna be v3.x...v3.99...v4.0 and so on...
is there any official websites of W4 and W5?

god is it really that hard.

winamp 5 is a DIRECT UPGRADE to winamp 2. winamp 2 is now dead. 2.91 is the last in the 2.x series.

1.x -> 2.x -> 5.x

not too hard to remember, its WINAMP x.x

now, we take a look at winamp3. incase you didnt notice, its not called WINAMP 3.0 its called Winamp3, is that the same title? nope.

thus, if you read back to my original post, you will see, winamp3 is the direction things would hopefully head towards, but due to it being a much bigger project than originally intended, winamp 5.0 buys time, while at the same time kicking some asshole.

If you are really pissed about it, use a reshacker to change the version number as well.

i just downloaded W5,lots of bugs ,but looking good though...
it's just like W2 ,only with W3's skins capability and new design\interface..
no new options or something like that...
i'm gonna stick to 2.91 'till W5 will get decent version to d\l
or 'till i get a better machine to make it work smoothly.

Are you sure about that?

In addition to freeform skin support and cd ripping/burning,
have you found these new features/options yet?

Dir monitoring to auto update the library
Playlist window -> load playlist from library
Advanced Title Formatting
Auto minibrowser (ml -> now playing) pop-up blocker
smooth window resizing for classic skinned windows

Look in "About box -> version history" for heaps more.

I thought 2.81 was the last of the 2 series. Anything after 2.81 contained elements of Winamp3, and was already becoming WA5. Thus, 2.81 is the true final 2.xx series, no?

i say winamp3 should have already been 2.x with better plug-ins, full compatibility, etc. alot less confusing. then we would continue on with 4, 5, etc. in the future.

maybe the next release of 3 could have been dramitically changed to be this, but then they released winamp 5

and if winamp3 is a diferent product name then shouldn't it be winamp + winamp3 = winamp/3, winamp(3), or something? (or just make winamp3 2.x with cool plug-ins and free-form skins, etc.)

It's just like when Microsoft released Office 95. Before that, each product had a different number (Word 6, Excel 5, PowerPoint 4, Access 2, and Schedule+ 1.) When 95 came out, all the numbers changed to 7.
