iTunes invention of the year 2003

Time magazine has announced that iTunes is (one of ?) the coolest invention of the year 2003.

http://www.time.com/time/2003/inventions/invmusic.html

Maybe I have underestimated the power that iTunes has mainly as we have not seen it here in the UK. ANd that it was initailly catering for the much smaller Apple marketplace which I am not part of.

Only time will tell if it truely will be as groundbreaking and music indusrty defining as the hype suggests.

I wouldn't call it an invention...but the fact that Apple managed to sell the concept to the record labels, musicians, and consumers is quite a feat. Nobody else has it together, across the boards, the way that apple does....they've got marketing hype, solid technology, and a business plan(use iTunes to sell iPods).

It's still not the "invention" of the year, though.

I was away for a while.
But I'm feeling much better now.

I would agree with Time's award.

This signals the beginning of real legitimizing of "file sharing". Now that there is a legitimate option, illegal file sharing is now deprived of many of it's "moral" arguments:

"I can't find rare tracks in the store"
Music companies are putting entire catalogues on Itunes/Napster

"Music companies release dumb albums with filler that cost too much"
You can legally Download the golden single for 99 cents

etc etc.

Now that there is a legitimate storefront, illegal downloading can now be more effeciently prosecuted.

Now is the time for all good Americans to come to the aid of their Country

Wouldn't the better term for them to use be something like: "Coolest implementation of old invention."

Isn't any invention beyond the wheel and fire an implementation of old inventions?
