general sound quality

can anyone recommend a good audio compressor for mac osx? needing to improve sound quality and so also intend to re-encode my files. want the optimum quality regardless of size issues, so am uncertain if 320kbps or vbr encoding would be better. have read that vbr maintains constistant quality but am really unsure of which to choose. also, stereo or joint stereo??
am curious as to if mp3s encoded with mp3 - pmlame would yeild better results than regular mp3 encoding.
any help is appreciated
