Soundblaster Live 5.1 gives freaky results

A friend changed from his internal soundcard to Soundblaster Live 5.1. Now his mic sounds like a robot with a blown voice coil... metalic, echo-ic, distorted, really strange!

He says he didn't change a thing, putting it in out of the box... he also says it sounds fine on his end.

Any ideas on what could be wrong and how to fix it?

Do you have an SBLive! soundcard?
