This is gonna suck big time. In many ways.
First off, buying a hard drive or expensive mp3 player is gonna cost a fortune now.
Also, the people that don't download copyrighted media are gonna start whining and blaming p2p users for the tax increase, which there already was long befor p2p ever was even thought of.
And people think Canadians are lucky, yeah right. Taxed to death is more like it.

I would much rather pay and extra $25 for an iPod then pay a $10000 out of court settlement thank-you-very-much.

It was already legal to download music in Canada, so you couldn't be fined. But now someone wants more money.

As long as it keeps them from hunting Canadian p2p users I'm glad it exists.

Heh..

That's ironic. Downloading is legal, but uploading is illegal. But, if there's a download, there's always an upload. So, an illegal act is required to perform the legal act of downloading music.

It is illegal for Canadians to upload mp3's, but the Canadian law does not extend to Holland, the internet does however. Please upload your mp3 libraries so us Canadians can have "free" legal mp3 files.

Yep. Canada pwns us all. Being a typical American, though, I download without giving a shit whether it's legal or not.

I'm glad someone else picked up on that. So they've effectively made it illegal.

No one says the uploads have to be in Canada.

Fellow non-copyright countries, open you hearts and your bandwidth .

Um. Downloading may be illegal in the US, but the RIAA isn't going after downloaders, only those who upload.

This basically doesn't change anything.

[edit] Furthermore, this isn't a court ruling, it's the opinion of the copyright board. Which legally doesn't mean anything - it's not law.[/edit]

bear in mind it's an international system. there is no need for one act to be illegal.

the point that xzxzzx made was a good one, though. downloaders have never been cracked down on. the "music thieves" have never been the victims. only those generous enough to share
