Download Winamp 5 and uncheck the features that you do not wish to use, it is a direct upgrade to Winamp 2. If you do not install:
Modern Skin Support Global Hotkey Support Signal Processor Studio Sonic Ripping/Burning Support AAC Encoding MP3 Encoding You will have upgraded version of all Winamp2 components and core. You may optionally want to install some of the above bits, but that's entirely your choice. But I'm feeling much better now. |

winamp 5 is an upgrade to winamp 2. use the classic skins if modern skin uses too much resources or get winamp 5 lite. make sure to do a fresh install as well, it'll minimize the chance of problems arising.
[edit]one of the mods will probably be here in a sec to explain a little better...read the FAQ[/edit] |

Winamp 5 is an upgrade to Winamp 2, the same way Winamp 3 was an upgrade to Winamp 2.
I tried Winamp 5, but its no better than Winamp 3. Winamp 5 is a memory hog and I dont want it. I want a good MP3 Player. |

Uhhhhh.... no.
Winamp3 1.0 is not an upgrade to Winamp 2.X. It is a separate product. Winamp 5.0 on the other hand is an update to the Winamp 2.X line. If you don't install Modern Skin support you pretty much have 2.91. |

You don't know what you are talking about. Go back and read through the previous posts in this thread, especially Gonzotek's and spleef420's. Quote:
But then again that's all been posted and discussed in these forums. Search and read through the forums to understand. Matter of fact, the distinction between the 2 products is also explained on this page at my site, under both the "About Winamp:" and "About Winamp3" sections. Also read the "Summary:" section there. Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads. GO BUY A NEW COMPUTER
For all the guys that still have a slow and
shity computer: GO BUY A NEW ONE if you want to have the latest software also !!!!!! If not, don't blame Winamp5 that is eating your RAM memory, it's because you don't have it. Go buy some 521 M, and you'll not cry anymore about programs that are eating your memory. Good luck ! :-) |

If you only install the parts of Winamp 5 that you need, you'll be fixing some existing bugs in your Winamp2 installation. That's a good reason to upgrade. If you come to us with a Winamp2 problem that's been known to be fixed in 5, we're going to recommend that you upgrade. Modern Skins do use a lot of resources. But you don't even have to install support for them, let alone actually use them.

1. I do know what I'm talking about, Winamp 5 reports using a shitload of memory. Winamp 5 is a memory hog. I tried not installing the uneeded componnents with no luck.
2. I have 512m but I'm an active multitasker, it gets used quite fast. So apparently chaisawcharlie doesnt know what he is talking about. 3. OK, well I dont know all the specifics on Winamp 2 -> Winamp 3 -> Winamp 5 and how they are related but I do know it slows my computer and thats really all I care to know. 4. Sound quality over Winamp 2 + MAD Plugin is still poor. |

Can you list the plugins and configuration you are using (both Winamp2 and Winamp5)? I'm curious as to why Winamp5 would use "shitloads" of memory, if you have it setup ala Winamp2 (classic skins, no media library, no hotkeys, etc.). If you're right, perhaps there is something that can be identified as an offender and perhaps it can be fixed. Perhaps it's a conflict between a third party plugin or other system-specific problem.
But I'm feeling much better now. |

Modern Skin:
Main Window Open - 11MB Windowshaded - 8.3MB Windowhaded/Minimised - 3.8MB Classic Skin: MW - 2.8MB WS - 2.2MB WS/Mini - 1.6MB iTunes uses like 12MB minimized plus two 5MB services that it installs, and like 24MB just to pull it up and open a ML. Winamp doesn't go up much at all when you open another window. WMP takes up 14MB when minimized. Doesn't really go down at all. Even more pulled up. Steam (the new Half-Life gaming client) uses 12MB just sitting there doing nothing. mIRC = 8MB; AIM = 14MB; Internet Explorer = 30MB for one window; Kazaa = 15MB. Winamps resouce usage is really quite low, especially using any of the many Classic skins out there. I've run 512MB for years now, of varying DDR speeds, and even with Photoshop, 3 Excels, 2 Words, and MatLab 6.5 open at once, plus AIM, Winamp, and mIRC sitting happily in the System Tray, I've never had a significant memory problem or overactive swapping to HD. Perhaps you have spyware/adware eating up system resources? It takes about 3 of those programs to use it ALL. I can't comment on Wasabi.Player, but I did install WA5 w/o Modern Skin Support on my 233/128MB of EDO (access time is like 5x slower then new RAMs) and it runs there. |
