I need some help with encoding

I have a number of movies as .wmv files. I have no problem encoding them. My problem is this: My upstream is limited to 256k (though it runs a bit slower than that most of the time) I need to know at what rate I should encode these movies to run smoothly on my connection.

Right now the video runs around 75 kbps and the audio at 24kbps. This seems to allow 2 users to connect without any rebuffering. The problem I run into though is that after a few minutes, the audio and video get out of sync.
This happens whether I am doing live capture, or from an encoded file. I guess what I am asking is if there is a better balance for audio/video to prevent it from getting out of sync, or am I just screwed due to my connection limitations?

Can you actually convert from .wmv to .nsv successfully? I wouldn't have thought this was possible. (Sorry, don't know the answer to your question but just thought I'd check because I'm interested to know if you can actually encode .wmv files).

It might be the the wmv to nsv conversion, but if its not, check all ur audio resampling. If the source is 44100Hz, then resample to 22050Hz or someother multiple. If source is 48000Hz, then use 24000Hz.

Yea, conversion from wmv to nsv works fine. I don't think thats the problem, cause it also happens with live capture. I'll just keep playing with the settings. As I said.. I need to keep my bitrate as low as I can (without losing too much quality)

My Framerate runs at 15, that could be the problem.. I'm trying to raise it up a bit.. its seems like its helping with the live capture.. We'll see. I'll also play with the audio settings.. thanks for your help

are you sure you have the very latest NSVTools? That seems to be something that afflicted the early versions. Also make sure you are using Winamp 5 to view the stream, Winamp 2.x doesn't have some sync fixes. I have done wmv to nsv conversions with absolutely no sync issues. How were the wmv's encoded? What frequency does the audio track run at?

Hi everyone:

There IS a way you can conver FROM Windows Media to NSV, but you'll have to wrrite them as either AVI or MPEG-1 files first (depending on the program you use).

Once you have them in eitherr AVI or MPEG, you can encode those virtually any way you want from there, though if there's any upsampling or downloading, it may take a while, but it will get done.

BTW....Just wondering if anyone knows if NSV tools have been updated since Christmas. I suppose I could check for myself, but if the only things that's been updated is something like NSVSCRC, then it probably won't be worth the effort for someone like me who's GUI-dependent I suppose.

Cheers for now
