Suggested sound tweaks for my system?

Hi all,
I'm running Winamp 5 and DFX for Winamp 2. My pc specs are:
Athlon XP Barton 2500+
A7N8X Deluxe MB
1 Gb OCZ Dual Channel DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Leadtek WinFast 2000 XP TV Tuner
Seagate 160 G. SATA
LG 4040 DVD
Klipsch Promedia 2.1

I elected to go with the onboard sound (Soundstorm) with this motherboard and leave my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz in another computer.

Any suggested tweaks or settings with my current hardware to maximize my mp3 sound?

anyone know the actual quality of the soundstorms... cos mine distorted whenever i tried to put sys volume anywhere above half way...
a7n8x deluxe using standard two speaker hifi (other soundcards have been turned up higher and no distortion has been heard thru the hifi...)
