justin on further projects:

"some new programs such as a free and open solution for mobile text messaging -- a kind of Gnutella spin on BlackBerry -- or some other stuff that he won't reveal."

He could name it after what's happened to Nullsoft over the last few years, how he feels AOL has impacted on his company... he could call it, oh, I dunno... FUBAR maybe.

Thank you Justin for all the wonderful work you've done -- Winamp5 is just awesome! Beats the pants off of iTunes or WMP. I always loved Winamp from the first time I checked it out (version 1), and now it's progressed to a point where I'd recommend it as THE DEFINITVE audio player/jukebox for everyone. Have fun in your new endeavors!

I predict that AOL will sell off Winamp within 6 months. I don't think they care diddly squat now that they've gotten what they need out of it. It's never been a revenue stream anyway and they haven't ever been able to figure out how to monetize music streaming or sales (thank God). Gettig rid of Jusin is just a punctuation point in Winamp's changing history. I'm surprised he and some of the others bothered to hang around as long a they did. They obviously didn't need the dough after the initial buyout.

what would be amusing is if justin bought it back for a very small fraction of what he paid for it. But the chances of that are extreamly tiny

They bought Spinner and Winamp/Shoutcast to ostensibly own the streaming music biz. They did won the pole position for a while but they failed to figure out how to capitolize on their advantage -- and now Ipod and everyone else is kicking their MBA'd khaki-wearing asses. More power to Justin and Tom P. and the rest. Go build something better and have the guts to hang onto to it next. Maybe they will since they don't have to worry about the payments on their castles.

I wonder if Digitally Imported is still getting
all that free bandwidth from Nullsoft/AOL,
or did they pull the plug on that?

It won't surprise me if the rest of the Nullsoft team eventually leaves too.
After they get Winamp finalized, why should they stay
under the oppressive thumbs of AOL?

'Bout fucking time.

I'm glad he left, now we'll see him in his pure form (again for some of you) instead of the locked and chained version we've come to respect but almost pity.

Keep truckin Justin, blaze a new trail, all those good cliche's that mean you'll kick ass wherever you go.

AOL won't be so quick to sell off Winamp. Even though its not bringing in any revenue, its a GIANT marketing tool. Ever wondered why you have to keep turning off the AOL desktop icons every time you install??

Its one of the most popular media players out there, its been featured in a ton of magazine articles. So why would they get rid of one of their signature products??

If winamp is all going downhill from here then winamp and shoutcast and other media stuff will be gone. Also Ultravox will be gone. Internet Radio will somehow come to a standstill I see it.

BTW. Will Mentioned that there is other coders that could keep Nullsoft going, so there isn't much to worry about. Right? Still it's a sad loss that Justin is gone! Let us not lose sight of that.

I'm having trouble understanding why we should "mourn his loss."

Loss? What the fuck? He's moving on, away from the control of AOL. Why are we sad? OH, right, cause Winamp is going to magicically become shite? No, I'm afraid I disagree. I think Winamp will be fine.

even if winamp5 ceased being made right now, i wouldnt care, because it does what it needs to do and more! imean, what more do we really want out of winamp that we currently don't have?

i think it was his plan to get wa5 to a finished point so he could leave.
