Wap
What is your opinion on WAP (internet access through cellphones)?
Do you use it, if so how often? Is it worth spending for a cellphone with such a feature? |

Depends. What kind of cell phone? I have a PDA phone, and WAP kicks ass, though it will read regular web sites and stuff, though my PDA phone is a weakling, so certain sites take forever to render.

I recently purchased a Nokia 2100 (latest?), but I was slightly disappointed at the fact that it doesn't have WAP compatibility.
Since I am interested in WAP, I basically like to know if it's really worth going for another cellphone with WAP: how easy is it to connect, or how fast it's access is. PDA phones are cool, but they're too little and too expensive here. |

Well, WAP can be useful for limited things, like checking movie times, using a dictionary, etc, but it's not anything like surfing on a PC. I had it with another phone of mine, and I liked it a lot for checking movie times, but other than that, I didn't really use it.

WAP is utter and total bollocks. What xzxzzx is talking about is GPRS internet, which is a lot different, as you can basically browse just about any webpage.
Also you pay for WAP and GPRS differnetly. WAP is generally paid for by the minute (average cost in the UK is 10p per minute), while GPRS is charged by the MB of data that you download. Connection speeds vary depending on the network coverage, signal strength and the amount of people using the service at that time. So for instance if you wanted to check the footbal scores in the UK at 16:30 on Saturday, you woudl find it slow. As for the Nokia 2100, don't bother with it. |

Hell...I didn't know GPRS and WAP were different, all this time. So that's what he meant (GPRS) when he said 'it doesn't count against my airtime'.
Thanks for the clarification, Bilbo. |

You can use WAP over GPRS though. WAP is just a protocol for writing sites for use on small screens.

I think it is a great technology, if there were more resources out there for it. I would not be implementing it if there were other sites out there doing the same thing.

I think there is still more to be desired from WAP before it becomes mor euseful, especially in regular cell phones. It's also quite expensive.

no cell phone of my own, but my mom's got an ok motorola company phone, kinda cool (never use the net on it much though) annoys me a little - can't browse a lot of websites and all the games and tones and other crap progs to d/l for it either cost money (subscription) or run out after x amount of days - so nah, the net on a cell phone is not really a big deal at all for me, think the d/l'ing uses airtime also
I hate everyone, so you don't have to.

Well I'm trying to send/receive email on my phone, but for some reason it won't find the server.
It'll browse wap pages over gprs perfectly well, the correct settings are in place, and the account is set up to allow MMS and email, but it just keeps timing out for some reason.

I have WAP, They charge me 3c per KB.
But the pages are so highly compressed I end up paying ~5 per month. (Most of it spent on 56kb games) |
