excellent, you should consider making the switch over to VP6, you'll get much higher quality videos with same bitrate

Im actually surprised that more community access type stations are not starting to show up. You cant ask for a better price on the downloading and using the software

Would be great use for community colleges / Secondary schools / community TV. Oh and WiFi TV too.

Im considering gathering up info on WiFi streaming and adding that to scvi.net as a add on section. Would be a great way to generate more interest on a global basis as well as a excellent Public Relations move for the NSV community

the problem is cost of bandwidth not cost of software.

One day P2P will catch up and bandwidth costs wont be a factor. Possibly even multicast stuff. Im sure it wont be too long though whatever the route.

Peer to Peer

Peer to Peer has caught up plenty - the problem is that no one has enough outgoing bandwidth to host a decent stream.

Its not really a good idea for someone who has no product and no revenue from a stream to pay a hosting company to stream their stuff. Its not worth it to pay your broadband provider money to increase your upstream bandwidth just so people can leech from you.

I have probably over a hundred and fifty movie trailers encoded into NSV, and I want to put up a movie trailer stream, but I simply can't (and won't) do it. Its not cost effective. Its not rewarding enough, even though I *KNOW* people will watch.

The "cool" level is high, but its a lot of work and expenditure for ZERO return.

ZERO return, and in most cases a heavy investment of time and money. That is why there aren't more stations than there are now.

this has been plaguing many in the audio streaming industry for years. However with what you propose you could make money given that you invest without return for several months to proove yourself. Then I am sure movie companies (although smaller ones most likely) would pay to put their ads on your stream.

I have seen VP6 streams running from 100 - 150 kbs encoding speed that offer very good in vidual quality. Its a matter of fine tuning a stream down to that particular level outgoing bandwidth. Granted its not DVD quality, but its just as good as what real video or windows media can do with the same amount of bandwidth. There are plenty of stations streaming with those methods at that bandwidth too.

Live 365 seems to be doing nicely for audio and the yp directory of shoutcast shows a lot of independent shoutcasters as well. Its only a matter of time for video.

People dont necessarily need to make profit to enjoy doing some thing. They do it just because.

Yes many people do it just because. But you'll NEVER see a huge tide of folks wash in who just do it because.

Won't happen unless many people can afford to do it somehow.

I think you will get alot of people who will do it just because. I do it just because, I enjoy it, and im willing to chip a little bit of money at that. For video its way too much.

Peer to peer can work and has been proven to work with nsv, but the majority of people using the software cant handle the bit rates we are throwing at it. Audio seemed to work really well, with vp6 moving along rapidly im sure that its going to start working alot better for lower bitrate streams.

Id like to know what people want to do when streaming mainly, ie a 24/7 stream, or stream events and more of a slotted system.

In the event of a slotted system the group would have maybe 2 or 3 servers and be able to sign out slots a day or two in advance for thier show? I was looking into it a little bit and if there were some interested people then i think it can work and would help keep the costs to each person down.

This doesnt have to be profitable but enough to cover the cost of hosting that your going to need. For nsv there are not too many hosts which are cheap. When i was looking i wasnt looking for anything big bandwidth, im streaming a cam more often then not. I talked to a shoutcast host which was 10 Users @ 0-160Kb for 19$Usd
Lets round that off to $20
Lets say your a group of 4
Each month you throw in $5
Now the thing is youd have to be pretty comfortable with sharing. But lets say you get 8 people. This would let you have another server going or beef up the first one with more listeners.

In this case i would be back here asking to see if it would be possible to change the passwords to the server with a php sign out sheet.
You could login to a members area after paying and be able to sign out a spot during the next days, depending on how it was setup you could request a couple. Anything left open on that day would be free game for anyone to sign out.
When you signed out a time, the server would change the password to a new password for your time, to prevent other users being a pain. Ive also see a time limit function in these forums.

If your running a 24/7 stream i think your should have a valid reason for it and be able to pay for the hosting for it.

Besides peer to peer or sponsorship i think this could be one of the cheaper things to do.
