Frequency range

Gday, What is the frequency response range of Winamp 5?
Does it depend on the file played?
What is the best way to find out this range?

Thanks

it should tell you on the main winamp window. currently mine is telling me it is 44.0 kHz

i believe is depends on the file being played, however i am not sure if it does 96kHz (DVD audio) yet but i may be totally wrong.

i think it does do 48 kHz although again i am not 100% sure.

but you can never have a higher range than the file being played.

Frequency range is two numbers. Eg the frenquency range of human hearing is generally 20-20,000 Hz (20Hz-20KHz).

I beleive the number you are referring to is the rate of information being played by winamp. You will not be able to hear a sound of frequency 44KHz.

it does depend on the file, and has nothing to do with winamp. It does have to do with the codec used to encode, and the settings used to encode. Winamp, by far, is not the limiting factor in "frequency response range." the encoding is probably the most limiting factor in most cases, with your sound card and speakers in a fairly distant second.

you are correct, 44.1kHz is the most common sample rate. it also depends on the file, and if your sound card supports it.

so what are the dependant factors in assessing the frequency range of an MP3 being encoded?? There are two variables (if i am correct). The Bitrate (eg 192 Kbps) and the sample rate (eg 44.1 KHz). Are either of these involved in determining the freq range?

Usually only the bitrate. Lossy codecs almost always lowpass the audio stream below 21 kHz.

The exception is when you resample to 32 kHz and below.
