buffering cut out

Sorry for being a dork...I connect at Broadband 2.3kbps and sometimes (say 50% of the time) find that my radio buffering cuts out and restarts again. The problem occurs with radio streams of virtualy any Bit rate. Can I make any changes in prefs or what?? Help appreciated. Also where would be a good starting point to find knowledge on getting the best out of Winamp (beginners version) I`ve tried FAQ without much success.
