Lightbulb

Fortunately, I had some free time today and also an idea. It is based on my leech/owl-shape-scribbles but more conventional:

>> texture_draft

Well, I know it is quite Mac/iTunes like, though it was not my intend. Suggestions for a name?

BTW, another idea:
Do you know rad-e8.com? It is the homepage of the man who made the legendary SNOW.E2 icons. He also made a media player skin called 'Y5.2' for the Mac player 'Audion'.

>> Y5.2 by rad-e8

Soon, he will release a new fabolous icon set. Why don't we port this skin to Winamp? He lives in the same town as me and i could ask him by mail, if he allows to work with it...

What do you think about it?

Very nice. better than mine.
Tried to think of a name Angel was one of the first thing to pop into my head.
Came up with somesort of theme.
Good vs Evil.
With a few really bright modes and a few dark ones. Maybe even some neutral modes.

mhhh...

What do you mean by clichée? Is everything with brushed metal on it a apple/mac skin and should not be done because everybody else did a mac skin before? I don't agree with u! Our coffee machine and the water boiler is covered with brushed metal and does not even look like a mashine...^^

If my draft should be discussed more, I already have some color variation shots to post, when they are asked for...!

dlinkwit27: If you are sooo sure, please give me a hint were to find Y5.2 for Winamp. I didn't find it...

though i'm not a fan of apple's brush metal themes, that's a kickass skin, neo.

"passion of the winamp" = some guy f'in around in photoshop for giggles
your texture draft = skin with actual talent put into it

is there anyway you could try to give it a little/subtle lift in the middle of it to add a 3d looking bend? it might might look good, it might not. just an idea.

the y5.2 would also be cool to see, if it hasn't already been ported. i think it'd look a bit better if the back/forward buttons were reduced in size by 50%, but that's just me.

THX-a-lot! That is the most positive comment on my work on the internet - I have to print it out and put it into a frame ^^
I am not satisfied mith the middle section, too - where is my volume slider? I also would have added a shiny surface like on the MMD3 main display (btw: mmd3 has also been made by a german ) but unfortunately I have no clue how to do that...has anyone xp-rience with it?
On the next shot, there will be a subtle lift, i promise ^^

Neoflox: Great Design. I like the shape, I like the texture. Whomever said its cliche: SO WHAT?! If something looks good, it looks good. Brushed metal has been done a million times. Do you know why? People like it. Though I must say that a little more color wont hurt. What I'm thinking about doing is what they did in Invictica with their buttons. A kind of fade-in glow to their buttons.

The little red dot is also a quite good extra there. We can easily turn that into a drawer. The entire top (the darker shade) moves up and voila! Equalizer in there. What do you think? But neoflox, I'd have to say that for now, your texture is the best.

IceGod: I really like your Good vs Evil idea aswell. But not in the way that you said dark and bright colors. Im thinking of horns and wings. Evil symbols and good symbols. NOT as everyone is probably thinking right now: Satan vs God. That's a bit of a touchy subject. But I'm thinking Demons vs Angels.

Go look @ the most recent submitted skin on any site. You won't see a brushed metal skin in there. why? because it has been done a million times before and people got tired of it.

I did look at the most recent submitted skins at a few sites. Guess what I saw? An even bigger cliche (once you cypher through all of the classic skins) Movie/TV Themes. But as you say, its cliche, fine. Whatever. Are you helping to create the skin in any way shape or form? If you want to be helpful, yes, tell me its wrong, but dont just be negative and give no solution. Thats not helpful.

that is not cliche @ all. Each skin is for a different show/movie. You don't see 15 skins made for Club Dread like you see wiht brushed metal. Also, casual skinners arn't making those skins. The companies are hiring people to make them. Look at who they are by. Get VideoGames, Petrol Design, IMAX NASCAR3D, etc. If you want to make a cool skin make it look UNIQUE. Why should I download your skin when it looks like 20 others I have? Unless your skin has a bunch of extra features, there isn't [a reason I should download]. If you want to do something unique, why not try to do something in a cell-shaded style? There have been a few attempts, but not one (that I can remember off the top of my head) that has been completed. Also, do something that will take a bit of SKILL to make. Any idiot with photoshop can apply two filters and get brushed metal. Again, not at all impressive.

look here>> top downlaoded and here at top user/staff rated. See any brushed metal? no. They get no respect. I am not going to stop you from makign it, I am just tryign to stop you from wasting your time on a skin which I doubt anyone will download.

ok, now that was useful and a good point.

Now, if you would explain to me what a "cell shade" is I would appreciate it. About having "a bunch of features" etc... Yes, thats the point of the skin. Its going to be a HUGE skin (see post #1 of this thread) with many functions, shades and options.

I am currently chatting to neoflox and we are exchanging ideas, but as usual we are getting nowhere. We got ideas, but we cant do them. So, if any1 is willing to point us in the right direction, please do so. I have read forums about what people like in WinAmp skins, great, but they dont tell me what people like winamp skins to look like. Guess why? People arent too specific, they want to see something, and if its cool, they'll download it. Whether its something with a brushed metal base or whether it has a bright yellow and orange base. People have the choice.

cell shaded = vector art, which is very stylish and not used enough

Ok, i see the links, i see the pictures, i know vector art. Im not an artist, I dont see the point of vector art as its just one of my pics without depth. Now, maybe you can RE-explain it for me so I see the difference, coz sorry, i dont. I know my tone sounds mean, but its actually just my pure n00bness and stupidity.

What about something simplistic, clean cut, usable, resizable, changeable, toggleable, and good looking.

Personally I would take a simple, functional skin over an elaborate mess anyday. Just my 2 cents.

Also, about the brushed metal discussion and how it is cliche'd; if you look at the #1 most downloaded skin (MMD3) you MAY notice that it's uses very subtle brushed metal. Granted it does not look like the image that neo posted it's still brushed metal and it seemed to work for Sven.

Thanks for your post syphen.

Yeah, but I think dlinkwit27's issue was that the skin was brushed metal based. Not just subtle.

I'm aiming for our skin to be as functional but also as simplistic as possible. Many fuctions, but not a cluttered player.

Please note: MMD3 may be the most downloaded, but hell, I download 5-10 skins a day and almost never keep it. I have 5 skins in my list (2 of them which are my own little things). Being most downloaded is not my goal. I want to offer people a skin they will enjoy and keep on using. If 10 people download it and keep it, I'm happy. If a single person tells me they love my skin and even just use it frequently, I'm happy. Maybe my goals differ from neoflox's, but yeah, thats my goals.

@ neoflox: i like the design but don't like the texture, it doesn't really fit in, when we change the texture, we could use it as shade mode

Yeah, sure syphen. Help is always welcome. I checked out your stuff on DevianART. Nice. My favorite has to be Eye-200. I see real Winamp potential there. Once again, I'll have to here from the rest of the team. UUL said he had an idea and so did neoflox. Lets hear from them.

you might want to add them to your msn buddy list. they can give you my address. I dont want to get spammed.

Sounds like a nice idea. I'll leave that one for the graphics people and see what they come up with. Meantime I'll scribble and fool around until I can start scripting.

WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?

oouh...sorry we forgot it...
What i wanted to say is that i would not even click on the detail view of it, when i saw it in a "recently added" gallery on a skin page...

UUL: Well done, I really go for it!

WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?

Before anyone of us goes into detail work on some drafts we should redefine, who the team is and what we really want to do here, don't we?! I doubt that this team project will lead to a satisfying product when it sticks in this thread. Sure, it is helpful to get inspiration and tips by senior user, but no one tries to find a solution for what this team thing intended in the beginning (Oz' 1st post). So, who is aboard? who councils? who leaves? These questions should be answered soon, i think.
Maybe you have another opinion about it - write it down and push the submit button for we need to know in what direction this thing must go!

More importantly, youneed to figure out who is going to code this. You only need one or two people on graphics, but unless someone is going to code this, or someone is going to learn to code this, you are screwed.

Hey guys. Sorry I havent posted in a while but my internet connection got fucked up.

Let's see what I missed. Syphen: The textures on that image is great. I kinda liked the Power button, it could make the skin more unique... but looks good without aswell, either way.

Neoflox: Agreed, we have to decypher who's going to do what with the skin. I reckon 1 or 2 graphics people are enough. Coding might be a bit harder since I've got some hectic ideas brewing up. UUL, me and maybe 2 other people I reckon should code.

Get back to me on that. If you want to make graphics or want to do coding, tell us, since there are now only a few people that are going to be involved in this project. We will also have to decide WHO is going to be the people involved.
