Serving through a LAN
Depends on your LAN, I'm sure.
All three of my servers are going from a very large university LAN We are not behind any firewalls, and we have two 10 mbps lines. No passwords needed or anything like that. We simply get the following info from our LAN admin, and enter it manually in the LAN connection information fields of our computer OS: --Your computer's IP address --Your LAN's gateway or router IP address --Your LAN's subnet mask --Your LAN's Domain Name Server IP address That should do it. At least that's how the LAN here is configured, and I believe most LANS are that simple. Then configure your SC DNAS/DSP as you normally would. LANs actually are great for broadcasting. They give you lots of bandwidth for very cheap. Hope your sys admins don't mind, though! |

OK. Let me be a little clearer. There's nothing special you have to do in the SC server config to broadcast on a LAN. Just follow all instructions as given.
If you still can't get on, you're probably behind a firewall. Many LANs are. I presume your LAN has static IPs. You'd also need that to broadcast. Another consideration is how many lines are sharing your LAN's gateway or router. YOU may have 10mbps, but the bandwidth you've actually got onto the Net may be only 1mbps if there are, say, 10 computers connected to one router. On a big LAN like mine, that last factor is a big unknown. I just do not know how much bandwidth I'm getting beyond the gateway. It's a bit of guesswork and close observation of how well my listeners are getting the station. |

Some basic issues first:
Which version of Winamp are you using? Version 5 will not work for broadcasting. If you're using Winamp 5, get an older version. I actually don't use Winamp for any of my broadcasts, so I can't speak fully to this. But I think Winamp works like any other streaming source. First, config the SC server, then after that, change the settings in the DSP to match. Or, do it the other way around--DSP first, server second. Really, broadcasting over a LAN is just like broadcasting over a modem, provided your LAN is configured for broadcasting. Quote:
