differernt icon problem w/assoc files

did a search through the forums for "icons" and didn't find anything on this particular problem. This has happened once before, and it annoyed me until I upgraded from win98 to win2000pro and reinstalled all my programs. Now I'm running winxp pro, and it's happened again. I associate mp3s with winamp. There is nothing in the windows explorer file types that assigns mp3s to Windows Media Player. For some reason, just today I see that all the icons for mp3s have a WMP icon. I opened winamp, made sure everything looked right (it did) rechecked the agent checkbox in the preferences, closed, restarted winamp. Still the same thing. Went to windows explorer to the File Type association menus. The mp3 files were still set to open with Winamp, but with a WMP icon. I switched to a different winamp icon, which worked. I happen to like the winamp icon which is a dog-eared page with the winamp bolt in the bottom right corner. This particular icon does not work. All mp3's have some random icon instead. I can't imagine why this happens, but any help is appreciated.
I'll link 2 screen captures to help explain what I'm talking about

Based on the screen shots you provided your MP3s have the right Winamp icon. The "square wave" or "hat" icon is Winamp's 16x16 file icon. That is the icon you see when using list or detail view in Explorer. When in Explorer try selecting Icons or Tiles from the View menu.

it works in icon and thumbnail mode, but not list.
I use detail view across the board, have been for years. It's shown the actual icon except the one time in the past, and now. It always has something to do with windows media player. what a P.O.S. I barely even use it.
