Full overlay support with AVS
Well, not sure how to explain this... When watching a video in Winamp, it uses what is termed in the options as "hardware video overlay". This is awesome to me not only because of the performance, but because with modern cards that have TV out, you can watch a video in Winamp in a little window (Or even minimized) on your monitor, and your TV will basically be a full resolution version of whatever is being viewed in overlay mode. So I can have Southpark going in the background on my computer while people sitting in my room can see it full screen on the TV.
My test setup for this example is using my second monitor as a duplicate of my primary monitor, with theater mode turned on in ATI's overlay options. Normally, what I see on monitor 2 is the same as monitor 1. But if I watch a movie or something, monitor 2 is the video in full screen (No matter what I do) and monitor 1 allows me to use Winamp, move and resize the video, or even minimize it, with no effect on monitor 2. AVS has support for two overlay modes... The most interesting to me is the "Overlay mode" in the normal display settings for AVS. If I enable this, it starts doing what I suppose is the intended effect... It replaces all of the black on my screen (Since that's the color I have selected) with the visualization. But on monitor 2, it brings up the very first frame of the visualization, full screen. So, I've got a full screen visualization on my second screen now, but it doesn't move. :-) While the color-based overlay is interesting, it's not quite as useful as being able to do hardware overlay... which seems like it's being done on some level already, it just doesn't do everything it should. Discouraged, I did find the "full screen overlay mode" on the Full screen settings screen for AVS. I liked this because it seems like it doesn't need to change the resolution of my monitor to be used. But with two monitors, again, it exhibits strange behavior... It goes full screen on monitor 1, and full screen on monitor 2, but monitor 2's isn't moving and seem to be odd around the edges. Basically, it seems like y'all are half way to a very interesting capability, even if accidentally. But now I want more! :-) |
