SpaceShipOne Sets new civilian Altitude Record of 41 miles

http://www.scaled.com/projects/tierone/index.htm
Quote:
This morning, the SpaceShipOne team completed another successful test of key systems on the SpaceShipOne reusable launch vehicle (RLV) and its carrier aircraft, White Knight.
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/0...hip/index.html
Quote:
"There was tremendous acceleration. We went very, very fast, and I went straight up" for two minutes, said 62-year-old pilot Mike Melvill, who floated weightlessly as he leveled out at 212,000 feet.

For those of you that don't know, the Ansari X Prize is a $10,000,000 prize to jumpstart the space tourism industry through competition between the most talented entrepreneurs and rocket experts in the world. The $10 Million cash prize will be awarded to the first team that:
  • Privately finances, builds & launches a spaceship, able to carry three people to 100 kilometers (62.5 miles)
  • Returns safely to Earth
  • Repeats the launch with the same ship within 2 weeks

There are some more details, check out http://www.xprize.org/

SpaceShipOne is one of the entries competing for the Ansari X-Prize of $10 Million.

Also happens to be the coolest looking (working) spaceship that I have ever seen!! Paint it green, and it could have come straight from the set of "Thunderbirds"....

I don't know if the story mentioned it, but that was also the first time the Department of Transportation has issued a permit for a private sub-orbital flight.

Does anyone know how much it cost for them to research, trial and finally build and launch that ship?

Interesting that the group is spearheaded by Burt Ratan, the holder of the round the world flight record and partially funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

at least they have some cool space ship designs. nasa is so uncreative when it comes to that. all function and no style. how can you cruise the stars without style?
