Can Shoutcast be setup like live365.com?

OK...I'm a complete newbie here. We are building a portal site for professional comics. One of the features we thought we would add would be the ability to play either tracks from established comics CD's and also tracks for the young comics that are taping their open mic experiences in their local towns every week. We don't expect to have too large of a listening audience since our site will be more industry specific in bringing the agents, club owners and comics together...but the general public will be more than welcome.

We looked at live365.com as a way to do this and then I stumbled upon Shoutcast today. Now, here is my main question. We have our own server, so we could install the Shoutcast server software...but is it possible to download our playlists somehow so we DON'T have to use a remote box here in the office to operate the broadcast? This is one of the features we like in 365live...you can download a playlist and just let it loop. From what I've read in both the Shoutcast website and in this forum today, I'm not sure if that is possible. If anybody could steer me in the right direction, it would be deeply appreciated.

TIA,
Osborne Sputnik

You can operate your own server, most people do in the beginning. Your only limitation will be the bandwidth to support large numbers of simultaneous listeners. You can stream your own "playlist" or whatever forever without intervention. Go to the FAQ in this forum and read the post on setting up shoutcast.

Well, thanks...I guess. I've spent almost all day searching for answers including the FAQ and really couldn't find the answers, so I posted my question in here in the hopes somebody might have an answer...not a reference to where I've been already. Maybe I was misunderstood.

Here's one of the things about live365 that we like is that your playlist is continually being played...it's not "on demand" so when you log onto your station at 365live, you pick up the feed at the point in the playlist that it is playing. This allows you to setup a broadcast schedule.

Now...can we do this with Shoutcast? Can we just upload a playlist to the server and it runs 24/7, just waiting for somebody to log on and listen? If someone could SPECIFICALLY direct me in the right direction besides a "go read the FAQ" reply, you would be deeply indebted to a group of professional comics and producers here in LA.

If not...thanks and I guess we'll go with live365

if your server is running on unix you could try using sc_trans in conjunction with the SHOUTcast server. This would make it so you would not have to remotely source the server from a windows machine you have there.

Thank you sir. I did a search in here on that file and found a wealth of info...and most of it from your posts. Yes...that should work and it's what I was looking for.

Oh...I know I'm so close.

I have the server up and running. I have sc_trans up and it appears to be streaming to the server. I have a test group of comics mp3s in the content folder and a playlist titled comedy.lst matching those mp3s. So...duh...what is the link I need to listen to this.

http://mydomain.com:8000/content/?

Thanks,
Osborne

YES! Success!

Well...it took me about 36 hours...from knowing absolutely NOTHING about Shoutcast...to getting our own radio station up and running. I had to do a ton of searching through threads on this board and a couple others...but I got it to stream a folder of comic's mp3s, just like a live365 station once I fiddled with the config files. Just shut down the server and now we get to design the radio page and prepare out playlists. Thanks for everybody who helped in the last day.

Oh...I don't know if this is proper...but here's the link if ya want to check it out. I have some old comedy bits and quite a few from newer comics you might never have heard before as a test run for the short time. The entire website should be completed in about another month. I just wanted to say once again, thanks to eveybody who helped. Once I grasped how shoutcast worked, it was pretty easy to set up. This is just what we were searching for. We now will be able to showcase unknown standups through our radio station.

the comedy board

You can "pimp" your station in the DJ & Listener Center forum.
