Seagate fights Hitachi with 5GB Microdrive

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0406/04...agate5gbmd.asp

This 5GB CF type II card can't be called a microdrive, but that's that it is. This unit is 1GB larger than Hitachi's version of this drive.

I'm weary of that thing....

Segate drives have been degraded in the "Quality Product" department as of late....

Hoepfully it won't cost $400 - $500 like Hitachi's overpriced microdrive.

That's still a ripoff when you can buy an mp3 player with a 4gig microdrive for only $200.

It's not really all that great for cameras either because the write speeds are fairly slow. With cameras like my Nikon D70 write speed is pretty important if you want to shoot a quick sequence of shots in RAW mode.

If you have a digital camera I recommend using SanDisk "Extreme" series. If I remember correctly, it has a 9MB/s write speed and a 10MB/s read. That's pretty quick, the Hitachi drive has a 7MB/s sustained write.

Plus, the drives have moving parts that are prone to mechanical failure. That makes them more durable.
