Mic and kbps problems ...

These forums are great and have answered many questions that I've had since I started Shoutcasting ... but now I have a problem that I haven't seen anywhere on here. If someone already has asked this question, I'm sorry ... anyway, here's the deal:

I'm usually broadcasting at 96 or 64 kbps but whenever I use the mic the kbps automatically drops down to 24. Happens every time. I'm using just the regular mic that came with the computer and people tell me that it sounds fine on their end ... and then the chipmunk voice kicks in. Any idea what the problem is and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance.
