You know, there was a reason why I didn't post that on the forums myself...

Anyhow, yeah, swapped out the harddrive for one from a twinned machine, containing a nice copy of (college licenced) windows 2000, Office 2000 and a copy of my thesis. As a "just in case" measure - in the sense of "just in case" they try to fuck me over and use mp3's, etc as a stick to beat me over the head with. Hopefully it won't come to that though.

Update: Just got a call from a friend in the college. Apparently there is uproar in th elabs at the moment - someone set the wallpaper of every computer in the student lab to photos of good ol' petey in various different poses in said stripclub

Update: Apparently this gets better. Through phone calls from friends around the college (I'm at home at the moment) I found out that the head of department

has been made aware of the situation in the engineering labs, and of the source of these photos, and apparently my supervisor has been called in to a disciplinary meeting in front of the college board!

Wasn't expecting things to go this far to be honest, and not sure if I dropped myself in the shit somewhat, but at the end of the day, what can he do to me? External examiner corrects my thesis, not him, and all my work is done, so...

*ethan_h keeps fingers crossed that this doesn't come back to haunt him...

But you should have known better than sharing files on a network from a computer considered by these people to be thiers. In a court of law, you would lose, simply because it was thier box and motherboard that you amped up and took as your own, improved.
Legally you could ask for your parts back in return for thiers, but there's no way that they have to give them to you. You played with fire ethan, and you got burned. It sucks that I have to say this but it seems I'm they only person here who knows that as a company, they have to assume blame when someone they are supposed to control is sharing files "illegally" on any type of network. Ethan, as the devil's advocate, I have to say, you should have known better, man. That sucks.
