But you should have known better than sharing files on a network from a computer considered by these people to be thiers. In a court of law, you would lose, simply because it was thier box and motherboard that you amped up and took as your own, improved.
Legally you could ask for your parts back in return for thiers, but there's no way that they have to give them to you. You played with fire ethan, and you got burned. It sucks that I have to say this but it seems I'm they only person here who knows that as a company, they have to assume blame when someone they are supposed to control is sharing files "illegally" on any type of network. Ethan, as the devil's advocate, I have to say, you should have known better, man. That sucks.
First of all I'm not claiming that I am in any way innocent in this situation. Nor do I advocate pirating software or downloading music. That doesn't mean that I don't do it, nor does it mean that I won't again as soon as I have internet access, but it does mean that I accept that the risk is my own, no-one elses.

Regarding my hardware though, I would very much like taht back, considering that I paid for the second hard drive, video card, RAM, soundcard, USB 2.0 card CD-ROM and CD burner out of my own money, and legally I am entitled to them, from what I found out. Technically, if I wanted to be a prick about it, I could counterclaim for these things, according to my solicitor (yes I have checked on the legality of where I stand).

Having said that though, I do understand where you are coming from on this (and I know that you are playing Devil's Advocate), but my problem is with the hypocracy of the situation, more than anything else. First and foremost, my final year electronics project (as advocated by the college, and which won awards on completion) was... wait for it.... a hardware mp3 player! And it simply didn't occur to them that mp3s might be involved?? I have lab technicians asking me to help them install kazaa lite, then reporting me for downloading files, lecturers with award winning porn collections, one lecturer in particular who ends up f**king one of the female final year students every year, who miraculously gets a decent grade, files being traded left, right and centre, funding for non-existing students, and this is the biggest problem that they have on their agenda??

Like my photography? Buy some here....

Most likely not the biggest, just the one that drew the attention. Good luck!

If ethan_h is to be sanctioned because he has used his computer "illegally", so be it but then, justice has to apply to everyone just the same, starting with ethan's supervisor who apparently isn't 100% clean in that regard.
Working in a big firm (hence a big LAN), I can testify that the bigger the network and the faster the connection, the more you'll be prone to use your computer "illegally". I do it and I accept the risk as well, but if some overzealous network guy (who probably opens firewall ports for his own convenience whenever he wants to), comes to me and starts lecturing me about my illegal activities, I'll just ring the local RIAA and anti-piracy associations and I'll invite them to look at the terabytes of mp3,s divx and cracked software on my firm's LAN, they'll sure be interested.
Hypocrisy really has to stop at some point.

A good way to hide on Universtity Networks

The New WASTE 1.5 also has a stealth function so network p2p detection tools will find it hard to find you or your shared files on the network .You can also use the chaff funtion so your data stream is constantly flodded with random data to they can only see bandwith usage and not actual data. You limit this to 64k/s and tell them your listening to internet radio .Also change WASTE's defult port .Then you can also encrypt your shared folder and they will have little chance to even find you.And dont let those lamers in IT on the mesh.

Also having porn on a network breaks a few Sexual Discrimination laws let alone most workplace and institution Network usage policies .

Sweet revenge ethan but they couldn't touch the comp anyway. As you say all that was theres was the mother board and case. 2 thirds of the computer belongs to you. therefore they MUST give you those parts in the same way as you left them.. i.e. HD not erased.
A simple e-mail warning of ownership and stating you would take legal action should the drive be accessed in anyway other than by the relevant investigative body/s (IRMA - MP3's?) legally they have the right - the college does not. they only have the right to discontiue your connection and then report there suspision to the relevant authorative body/s.
Simply put your supervisor is also guilty of theft by deprivation, i.e. he deprived you of your property without any lawful or legal reason. remember they can only break your connection, not touch your stuff.

Whichever - do like your way myself ....watches news avidly ........
