Winamp Modern Skin

I have Winamp Version 5 and it will not let me use the modern skin. When ever i try to chose the modern skin it just shows me the classic skin. Before today i was able to use the modern skin with no problems. I do not use any of the plug-in's nor have i downloaded any third party plug-in's. I have tried to uninstall and re install to no avail. i thought it might be my desktop settings but that isnt it either. Any help would be apriciated.

When you reinstalled, was that a full uninstall/reinstall of Winamp?

Otherwise please post a reply with system specs. Also what did you mean by “I do not use any of the plug-in's”? Do you have Winamp's default plug-ins installed?

Yes it was a full uninstall/Reinstall.

System specs:

AMD Athalon 500 Mghz Processor
128 Mb Ram
40 gb & 8 gb HardDrives
Windows 98 SE
Soundblaster Live! Sound Card (With Updated Drivers)
Diamond Viper V770 Video Card (With Updated Drivers)
CD-Rom & CD-Burner
Cable Internet Connection

And yes....the default Plug-In's are installed. But the only thing i use whilke listening to MP3's or Streaming Audio is "Main Window", "Playlist Editor" & "Media Library"

I hope that this helps.

When you reinstall did you reinstall with the Full version of Winamp? The Lite version not support modern skins. I have a feeling you did install the Full version, but please confirm. Note: the Full version is free.

Go to Winamp Preferences (Ctrl+P) > highlight/select General Purpose under Plug-ins and please post a screen shot of the Winamp Preferences box. I am trying to see if the modern skin plug-in installed properly.

Yep, that is what he meant. In that list there should also be an entry 'Nullsoft Modern Skin Support'.
As JonnyMac suggested: did you install the FULL version of Winamp when you reinstalled it? Be sure to check Modern Skin Support in the installer.

ok...i have Uninstalled and RE installed Winamp 5.03 and i did make sure that "Modern Skin Support" was checked. It didnt work! I am getting frustrated! The whole reason i downloaded the newer version is so that i could get the modern skin and for a while it worked and now all of a sudden it doesnt work.

Is the modern skin something that i have to pay for? is it available only on the pay version of Winamp?? i am running out of ideas

Nope. Modern skin support is free. I am running out of ideas as well.

The FULL installer (direct link, though pretty sure you used that one...) should install Modern Skin Support.

I really don't know what's going on...
Could you check if the file gen_ff.dll is present in Winamp/Plugins?

Anyone else ideas?

[edit]
If you want, you can post a HijackThis log

Maybe there's some prog running, preventing Winamp to install properly...

Actually, please post a Hijack This log. Download Hijack This from the siebe83’s link or use this direct download link. After downloading HjT it will be ready to run. Run HjT and press the 'Scan' button. After scanning the button will change to a 'Save log' button. Save the report as a text file by giving it a txt extension instead of log. Example: HijackThis.txt. Please do not use the 'fix' button. Then attach the HjT log with your next reply.

The purpose of the start up log is it will allow us to see any malicious software that could be causing the problem.

Also go to the Winamp plug-ins folder (usually C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins) and let us know if you see the gen_ff.dll (mod skin support) file.

This is starting to look like this thread…
winamp changed to old version

nando707 never told us if the problem was resolved.

That is the only file you see, no other files? It seems the .dll (plug-in) files are hidden from view. Try the following steps...
How to View System and Hidden Files in Windows.

If you don’t see the file extensions (ie .dll)…
Configuring Windows To Show Extensions

I am at work now, so I will return to this thread at a later time. You are not being a pain. We like this problem solving stuff.

The gen_FF.dll File is in the folder. What does this file actually do? is this the DLL file that controls the Skin?

First off, download CWShredder

Homepage | Download

Save it to its own folder, eg. c:\program files\cwshredder

Double click CWShredder.exe to run it.

Now print out these instructions, and close ALL browser and Windows Explorer windows.

Next, click the FIX button
and let CWShredder fix all instances of the CoolWebSearch trojan.

_____________________________________________________________________

Now run HJT again.

If any of the following entries remain, checkmark them, and then click the "Fix Checked" button.

Note, CWShredder will have already got rid of some of these entries.

O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\Web\tips.ini

O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\hh.htt (HKLM)

_____________________________________________________________________

After fixing all the above, it is now time to reboot.
I advise booting into Safe Mode here.

_____________________________________________________________________

Now make sure you can see hidden files and folders.
If not, instructions can be found here

If you installed GhostKeylogger synch agent yourself or not...

http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/g..._keylogger.asp

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Synchronization Agent] C:\PROGRAM FILES\SYNC MANAGER\AGENT\SYNCAGENT.EXE

then I suggest you uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs Control Panel

_____________________________________________________________________

Now check to make sure if any of the following files exist.
If found, move them to a backup folder somewhere.
(You can delete them after another reboot, as long as there are no problems).

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\HYW57S~1.DLL

Note, this will not be the exact filename.
The ~ means that there will be more characters inbetween the HYW57S and .DLL
However, it's possible that CWShredder will have already fixed and deleted this file.

Also delete the following (remember to back them up first, just in case):

C:\WINDOWS\Web\tips.ini

C:\WINDOWS\hh.htt

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\image.dll <-- this is the proper nasty (CoolWebSearch source file)

_____________________________________________________________________

Next steps will be to empty your Temp folder and Temporary Internet Files.
You know how to do this, yes?

Temp Files:
My Computer > right click "Drive C:" > Properties > Disk Cleanup
Make sure "Temporary Files" is checkmarked.
If that option isn't available under Win98SE, just go to
C:\Windows\Temp
and delete everything
(note: Windows won't let you delete any temp files which are currently in use)

Temp Internet Files:
Control Panel > Internet Options > Temp Internet Files > Delete

_____________________________________________________________________

Now it's time to reboot back into normal mode.

I strongly suggest that you install and run the following:

Adaware
Spybot Search & Destroy
SpywareBlaster

I also suggest that you do a free online virus scan at the following places:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/

When done, you can post a new HijackThis log here if you wish.

_____________________________________________________________________

Now try to reinstall Winamp 5.03 Full with Modern Skin Support checkmarked.
And check that gen_ff.dll is present in the "Winamp\Plugins" folder.

I strongly recommend a clean install

gen_ff.dll provides support for Modern Skins.

There should also be a Freeform subfolder in the Plugins dir.
\Winamp\Plugins\Freeform\xml

Good luck, and let us know how you get on...

I have followed your instructions to the letter. And while my computer now runs much faster and i dont have some of the problems i was having before i am STILL having the Winamp problem! GRRRRRRR. the only thing i have not done is download the Winamp version 5.03 file again and use the new file. I have checked to make sure that the gen_ff.dll file is where it is supposed to be and that the Freeform folder is where it is supposed to be. and it STILL will not let me use the modern skin. i have even tried downloading other modern skins found on Winamps page all to no avail.

I have attached the new HjT Log file for your viewing pleasure. Please help!!

I understand this frustrating. Try deleting your current Winamp installer file and re-download the installer again.

Did you try clean install as DJ Egg suggested? Or try installing to another directory as siebe83 said.

I have done the "Clean Install" i even re-downloaded the installer file to no avail. i have NOT tried the different folder technique yet but i am doing it right now. I will keep you all informed.

Could this possibly be a bug in the new Winamp version 5.03?? Could it be my Video card?? I have the latest drivers for everything. I am anal about checking for the latest drivers for my computer ) If the new directory doesnt fix it i will not take up any more of your valuable time. If this does not work is there someone i should be reporting it to? Like you do when a program has a bug or something? Thanks again for all your help. It is appriciated.

The different directory didnt work. I even tried to pick a different Skins directory to no avail. If i need to report this to Nullsoft or someone else please let me know as i believe that this is something that should be fixed.

Thanks again for everyones help but i think that my situation is just too weird to be anything i am doing wrong.

PS i have been using the free version of Winamp for some a long time now could it be that Nullsoft has put a limited time on the player?? You know...like a demo of a game that after 30 days or something that it will not work fully unless you get the Pro version? If this is the case please let me know. i would also like to hear from other folks that have had a similiar problem. Other than the modern skin not functioning the player is the greatest in the world and i will not use another.

The free version is absolutely free. No time limits.
The Pro version provides high speed CD ripping and burning. Installing Pro will not solve the mod skin support problem.

[edit]When I have time later on I will compare your specs to nando707’s maybe I can come up with some common factors (other than you both having Win98).[/edit]

I have compared your and nando707’s specs and HjT logs. Both of you share commonalities, but that is to be expected. I could not find any common factor in particular that would give some clue as to what is going on.

You don't need to report the problem to Nullsoft. The Moderators do keep the Winamp developers up to date on bugs reported in the forums.

Whatever is going on it is very strange. You are the second user to report such an occurrence. I will be interested in seeing if any else reports this also.

And if any thing new develops please reply here as i will get the email and be able to read it.

Hello!!!~ I found the solution to the problem!! THe problem was that a file OLEPRO32.DLL was missing. Just download the file off the net and put it in the Windows\system folder and winamp came back to normal!!

Yeah, that would explain it.

olepro32.dll is the Windows core Object Link Embedding library, and many programs rely on this dynamic library to be present for certain functions to work.

It's possible that some virus ate yours...

Anyway, glad to hear you solved the problem.

@ adwait

Congratulations and thank you for the update!

As DJ suggested a virus might to be blame. Although you probably already will do so (or have done so), my I suggest that you run your virus scanner with the latest signatures/definitions.

The get a "second opnion" try one or more of the following on line virus scanners...
HouseCall from Trend Micro

Symantec Virus Scan

Command On Demand

Panda ActiveScan

Also, to rid you system of any possible ad/spyware (etc) use Spybot Search&Destroy and/or Ad-aware .

same problem here!

i have read this entire post, and i'm not quite sure what to do.. i have tried it all, as far as i can see.. anyway, here's my problem:

i tried to install a new modern skin, but nothing happened. the original skin appeared instead. so, i tried using an old modern skin i had, and that one worked.

i checked for this olepro32.dll file, and i had it in my system32 folder. and the modern skin support plugin is obviously installed. so. any clues on this? it's not the first skin i had to let go.. just annoying not to be able to use all the skins out there, just a few..

btw, the working one is "official skinit.net winamp skin". the one i counldn't make work this time is "512advanced4WA".

here's my data:
abit nf7, amd xp3000+
1024mb ram
win xp pro sp2
winamp5. full

any help is appreciated..!

Winamp 5.08 Full, yes?
Installed any extra 3rd-party plugins? If so, which ones?

512advanced4WA? I can't seem to find that at winamp.com/skins. Got a direct link?
Did you place the .wal file in the Winamp\Skins folder?
Does it appear in the Skins menu?

A HJT log might also prove useful...

Blah, too late. However, I have already typed out my reply

Although a variant of the issue, yours is completely different. The issue in this thread is modern skin support was completely disabled by the removal of the mentioned filed (olepro32.dll).

However, you still have Modern skin support, but are having troubles downloading or displaying mod skin(s). You are using WinXp SP2, it might be the following issue...

Hmm, yeah, I forgot about that stupid IE6/XP sp2 issue, and that people still suffer with using the dreadful IE browser, heh.

I know it sometimes downloads .wsz classic skins as .sz or .zip, but what does it do with Modern .wal skins? Even if it downloads them as .zip they should still work when manually placed in the Winamp\Skins dir, even without renaming them to .wal
