gah

All I wanted to do was make Trillian give me a little popup notification when I get new mail in my gmail account. I didn't realize I'd have to download 30+ megs of bullshit to do it. In the end, I just said fuck it.

First, I get a gmail account. Cool beans. I didn't know that it didn't support pop3 or whatever, though. I figured that it'd just be a matter of downloading a plugin and configuring it to check my gmail account every couple minutes or so. WRONG. Gmail doesn't support pop3, so I need to download a local pop3 server program. Urgh. Pop Goes The Gmail was suggested to me, so I download that. By now I'm already frustrated beyond belief. And it just gets worse. Turns out, in order for PGtGmail to work, I have to download some bullshit .NET runtimes. Wtf is that all about? 23.7megs for those. Half way through the download, I just gave up and cancelled it. Then I uninstalled PGtGmail, and deleted the Trillian plugin.

<sgtfuzzbubble99> ugh, now I've got to download these fucking .net runtimes
<sgtfuzzbubble99> goddamn why's it got to be so fucking complicated?
<sgtfuzzbubble99> all I want is some simple notifications for my damn mail
<Timmy> the page said you needed the .NET runtimes
<sgtfuzzbubble99> I know, and now I'm downloading them
<sgtfuzzbubble99> but that's beside the point
<sgtfuzzbubble99> I'm just about to cancel this download and say fuck it
<sgtfuzzbubble99> I'm sick of this shit
<sgtfuzzbubble99> a simple fucking popup shouldn't take so damn much
<sgtfuzzbubble99> 23.7 megs
<sgtfuzzbubble99> plus a local pop3 server
<sgtfuzzbubble99> plus a plugin
<sgtfuzzbubble99> wtf
<sgtfuzzbubble99> all for a popup
<sgtfuzzbubble99> you kno
<sgtfuzzbubble99> most people hate popups
<sgtfuzzbubble99> and here I am
<sgtfuzzbubble99> trying to get them
<sgtfuzzbubble99> wtf

Hmmm... gah should have been Gah. Its the start of a sentence so the first letter of the first word should have been capitalized

"Well, got to love you and leave you, need to go get into the shower and rub my hard naked body all over with soapy bubbles, I'll be back later to carry on playing....

It'll take you some time to get over the image of me naked in the shower......mind you don't masturbate to hard thinking about it...."

I think Pop Goes The Gmail was meant to be its own little pop3 notification program.

It was, but also to give you pop3 support for programs such as Outlook and Thunderbird.

Sarge, did you actually pay $25 for Trillian? Because as far as I know, for it to check mail with those plug-ins, you need to Pro version. Why would ya pay the money for that?

And it looks like you missed a period in there, too.

I have Trillian Pro 2.013 running on my computer right now. Did I actually pay cash money for it? No. BT is good for something, at least. And the plugins? Someone was nice enough to try and help me out with my dilemma by sending them to me. Even though it didn't work out in the end, I do appreciate the help.

I hear you've got to download Java to run Java programs now, too. It's a sad world

* sgtfuzzbubble99 slaps zootm around a bit with the sarcasm stick.

It's not the fact that I have to download certain files for this to work that angers me. What angers me is that I have to download almost 24 megs just to get a little popup notification. There's no reason for something that simple to take that much space. I don't know what else is in that 24 megs, but it sure as hell doesn't have anything to do with email notifications.

It is a big download but is like having to download Java to have some applets run, i.e. once you have it then you can use any .net app. Next versions of windows will probably come preinstalled with .net runtime, but until then is probably a bad move for people to write little things like this in .net as people don't want to have to download the runtime.

Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.

It's an unfortunate consequence of the language it's written in. On the plus side, though, you can now run any .NET program - the bottom line is that if you use 1 .NET program, the runtimes are a chore. If you use many, it ends up being a saving, because that's a lot of stuff that doesn't have to be repackaged with every single program. The programs end up being considerably smaller, but the runtimes are a "constant" tax. I think you'll be seeing a lot more .NET programs around soon, so it may end up being worth it, same as Java.

Although you'll need the latest version...

I never was able to figure out what this ".NET" framework crap is, anyways. Can anyone give me a simple explanation as to what it is or does?

Microsoft made these new languages with a bunch of built in shit. The .net framework is all the built in shit of the languge. So the .net programs can be smaller, becuase the shit is in the .net framework instead.

run times (xzxzzx's: built in bullshit) work alot like the library works in a compressed file.
But if you don't know what runtimes are, you probably don't know how file compression works. So for you, computers will continue to be those mysterious magic boxes of porn.
