need pc help
Ok, all of the sudden my pc started getting slow and lagging. Every few mins it takes a 3 sec break or smth cause the mouse doesnt move. It becomes unstable often. I rebooted and now it wont even get an ip from my router, just gets a 169.* ip. I ram spybot s&d and avast! antivirus and it found nothing. I dont want to format but its unusable atm, im on my laptop. I have too much porn to backup so I wanna wait til I get a 250GB hard drive tomorrow. Anyone have any ideas? the network cable is plugged in as I dont get a network cable unplugged message. My other pcs on the lan are fine. This one is plugged into a hub in my room, but nothing else is plugged into the hub

have you tried doing a repair install of windows, getting it at least running so you can backup your por....err "files". If not....then use knoppix to copy files to another HD or to CD

I think that reformatting is tossed around too much now. Isn't it supposed to be a last resort? Something weird happens, BAM! reformat. There's usually a way to fix the problem without resorting to such drastic measures. And if there isn't and you end up reformatting, do yourself a favor and make yourself a seperate partition for your windows installation. That way you won't have to worry about deleting data to fix this type of problem.

I have come to a realization. I recently perfomed a clean install of windows from a WinXP disk (some of you know why), and it was incredibly fast for several days. Then I remembered all the flaws that had been found since those turn-of-the-century days, and went to WinUpdate and got all that patchery. And guess what? Windows immediately slowed back to the way it had been before. Load-time (the time the icons in the lower right hand corner take to all appear) went from less than a second to roughly eight seconds or more, searching takes longer, pages take longer to load, and fractions of a second seem attached to nearly every action. Don't get me wrong, it still runs pretty fast; but those updates have bogged it down quite a bit!
So why do all thoses patches slow everything down so much? Do they all have to load with every instance? |

Try using this product -----> http://www.tune-up.com/
It's free to try, and it should be able to fix any system problems you have without requiring you to buy it. (I hope...I bought it before I did very much with it, so I'm not sure what kind of limitations the demo version has...nothing but the time limit, I would think.) Specifically, run 1-Click Maintenance first. It does a basic check of several parts of your system (registry, file structures, shortcuts, etc.) Then run Registry Cleaner. It'll do an in-depth analysis and repair of your registry...where many system slow-downs can occur. Then check Process Manager to see what's running, and then Startup Manager to get rid of things at startup time that aren't needed and only slow the system down by eating up memory. With SystemControl you can do discreet adjustments to system settings that you couldn't otherwise do in Windows. If you know your way around the registry, it comes with a very cool Registry Editor that's much more capable than Windows RegEdit. TuneUp System Optimizer can make one-step performance improvements to your system and network/internet connections. And finally, you might try running MemOptimizer. It resides in memory, taking a few MB itself, but with it you can clear out memory when memory's running low. Low memory is the biggest culprit that causes bad system performance, and low memory is most often a result of too many things running at once. The tool I linked above can give you control over anything that runs on your system, as well as many other areas too. I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash. |

There's another realization I've come to; whenever I ask a question of this board, I'm likely to get one third answers, one third good jokes, and one third opt-out walkarounds.
I guess that's a pretty good ratio, though. Even if I know 90% of my stuff would never work with Linux from experience. |

Didn't mean to offend anybody. All I'm saying is that in my experience, my stuff just worked better in linux. Its different for everyone. I can't be of much help with Win XP because I've never used it.

a very long time. That computer is a huge mess and truthfully i'm not really surprised it turned up so many problems. Since i got my new computer, i sort of stopped maintaing that one. I'm kind of hesitant to do a defrag right now. I have a suspicion the hard drive is on its last legs.

yea, i'm amazed its lasted this long. Its a whopping 4 gigs. I might as well just throw the 4 gigs onto my new computer and go buy a new one to go with my nifty 133mhz processor. But, that comp gets the job done and all i really ask of it is to run aol so my linux machine can connect to the internet.

1. Go to your command prompt (Start -> Run -> 'cmd' for 2k/XP, or Start -> Run -> 'command' for all other versions of Windows) and type in 'ping 127.0.0.1' to make sure your TCP/IP wasn't corrupted.
2. If you get a response, make sure your router is still using DHCP to assign IP address. Most routers use 192.168.1.1 for the login address (yours may be different though). Even though you aren't getting an IP, you should be able to log into the router. 3. If it's setup for DHCP access, perhaps you could try reinstalling your NIC drivers. If that doesn't work, then what version of Windows are you running? |

What happens when you plug in the cable and ping the localhost?
From the way it sounds, I would suggest either your NIC is bad or the drivers are incorrectly installed. Also, be sure to try a different cable to make sure that it's not the one you're using. |

try www.trendmicro.com for your antivirus check. Your avast might not have been up to date? If not that ... you can go wherever you get your porn and get something better...

Doesn't mean that there's not an issue. I've heard cases of mobos being taken out of the bag and having a problem in one of the DIMMs, etc. Like I said, try a driver installation and see if that fixes it first before you go unscrewing things. hehe

on my mobo the USB just seemed to slowly stop working on my board. I think you may have a mobo problem. if you can get a PCI nic from a friend and test that

or you can make a windows xp cd that will install all your ass automatically, although its more hassle. I''ll probably do neither though, as my list of "essensial apps changes regularly...

Yeah, so do I partially. But everytime, I want Office XP, Visual Studio 6, Visual Studio.NET, WinAmp w/plugins, Video Players, DVD Writer Software, Radeon drivers, Sound Blaster drivers, etc. etc.
The games and stuff get installed when I want them to the target drive only. |

I've heard many people say Ghost is awesome. Better than Partition Magic from what I understand.
