Brainteaser

I saw this on a cheap cable channel last night. I know the answer to it, but I can't figure out why it is that. Anyway, you've got 24 hours to guess how many isoceles triangles can be made by joining the pegs.

Well it really depends whether the bottom row, second from right peg is meant to be out of kilter, or whether it's just a shoddy diagram.

If it's not meant to be like that, I can also see 33, at a rough count. I suspect I may have counted some twice though.

I can see 35, but I think I counted two of them twice.

Hint: isosceles triangle - Two sides are equal in length, and two angles are equal to each other

I think we're all aware of that (except possibly zootm if he wasn't being facetious).

If you want to be a smartass, there are none because the pegs are not an equal distance apart. If that's the answer, then it's not really a brainteaser more than a question about who's the most pedantic.

I can count at least one isosceles triangle there, i.e. the one marked, assuming that the distance between any two adjecent pegs is intended to be equal.

think about it for a second, Russ. Is this forum only used by people living in the USA..?
I might be the only one here, but I didn't know what an isoceles triangle was. I guesed it was what he said, but I couldn't be sure untill MonKeyRum said it.
Maybe he just wanted to be nice..?

What does the US have to do with you not knowing basic geometry? Do all other counties not have schools?

Or is this all a really, really dry satire?

it has to do with the fact that people from other countries might not know what does "isoceles triangle" mean.

"Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?"

I've heard about Pythagoras, but I've never heard about "isoceles".
I do have basic education, but in my country we call it "likesidet trekant".. "trekant" means "triangle" and "likesidet" means that all the sides have the same length (sp?)
so, yeah, sorry about that..

...about 20..

These are the ones I found, though the ones in the bottom right are wrong, the two longest lines, one is shorter by about 12 pixels.

Note that each triangle has it's own color. So ones that have two of the same color, they're part of one triangle, just overlapping with another.
