You're not referring to one of the ads one the top of the forums pages are you? Hopefully, it's not the ipod thing. There's nothing that's free.

You have to sign up for something to get the "Free" item. You may need to buy a month of AOL, or be an active user at eBay, or subscribe to a magazine (Those are a few from the ipod thing)
And then you need to get 5 other people to do the same. They get enough money from those offers to give out an ipod and still make a profit.

Unless it comes from a reputable company, it's most likely it not always a scam. Best way to protect yourself is avoid them at all costs.
