Remove shoutcast buffer...
I posted the same topic in Shoutcast zone and i was told to post it here. So here it is:
I have a problem with Shoutcast. I'll try to describe it the best way i can. I use NSVcap to capture from a TV Tuner and Shoutcast to stream to another PC where Winamp is used to play. So, when Winamp starts playing the broadcast it begins ok, but with time a delay appears. The more time passes by, the bigger the delay. Sometimes what i could see on Winamp had happened 15 minutes ago. When Winamp is stopped and restarted it begins with the accumulated buffer, which is NO LONGER needed and i need it to begin a fresh new stream. Can i disable that somehow? I think is caused by Shoutcast. Someone in this forum told me it's because of the buffer that Shoutcast creates. If so is there a way to disable or at least lower it. There isn't such a setting in the config file. Anyone with ideas? |

edit: it's called QoS, or quality of service, To make it look good it shows the last 30 seconds of buffer before starting the new stuff. To fix it? Restart shoutcast. There is NO config option for this as idiots would turn it off then never figure out why people were complaining. The 15 minute thing ahs only occured when my streamer guy was on a bad conn (his cellphone, lol) and it was going in and out so the "blank spots" didnt happen, or i'd get buffer: 0% until he reconnected, and it started where i left off. However if someone starts streaming and immediately watches, shoutcast has a buffer to start from which is a rotating 30 seconds. DEAL WITH IT. (Plus this will happen with music too so the guy in the shoutcast forum was just trying to "pass you off" to us )

If you have a delay of 15 mins then something is wrong, shoutcast's buffer is like 1 minute tops. Try reading up on nsvenc and using that to stream rather than nsvcap.

The connection is LAN. That's why there shouldn't be any problems with it. That's why i was shocked. Can it be because the streamer's PC isn't that powerful?

delay is not a matter of connection normally. It's how the server and client are configured. You cannot change the way the server is configured. It has a 1MB buffer. However you can adjust your client through the NSV plugin settings. Also to slightly decrease delay you should use a higher bitrate. Typically in the neighborhood of 100kbps - 200kbps. Also there could be delay at the source, once again something you can't control.

Will newer version include a buffer control ?
It would be so nice. It would bring Shoutcast to newer applications. |

er, how would it bring shoutcast to newer applications, the thing will never be realtime and it will give your users the sensation they are connecting to a server written in 1995.

for an example of a server which allows you to use smaller buffers, please look at realplayer, the player made famous for BUFFERING on the client side, which made for very low QoS.
