Bass problem

I have some shitty Altec Lansing 221 speakers (2 speakers and a woofer) and for no matter what i do, i cannot get the bass to chill out on them. It is overbearing. I mess with the equalizer and I can get rid of the bass, but the quality turns tinny and bad. Now my roomate convinced me to try out WMP for the first time, and to my surprise, the sound actualy sounded much better in comparison. But i had the small problem that WMP sucks in every other aspect. Any suggestions so that i do not have to make the evil 'switch'?? Thanks in advance for the help...
