Is Nick Oliveri back in QOTSA?
I found out a bout a year ago that Josh Homme had kicked out Nick Oliveri from QOTSA. But I was looking on the band's site today, and his name is still mentioned through the site.
So is he back in, and will he be on their new album? |

I think the more important question is: Will it again be compressed to death like the last one?

What are you on about? The last qotsa album was the best album I've heard, which is why I'm drooling in anticipation over the new one.

I like the music on it too but it has absolutely no dynamic range, everything is exactly the same volume.
Unfortunately this is quite common these days but Songs For The Death is one of the worst examples (so bad even the AMG reviewer noticed). Try listening to some albums from 10-15 years ago (eg. Meantime by Helmet), replaygained or mp3gained so the average volume is the same, and tell me which sounds better. |

I think that compression shit is a part of their style. Artsy-fartsy stuff you know. (and it's Songs for the Deaf, not Death)
Seriously, i don't know what the overdone compression would be good for, but as their songs are are as good as they are in all other aspects this won't stop me from buing their new album when it's released. |

Right, this is all well and good, but does anyone know if Nick is back in or not?

yes, i know that, that's the whole idea of compression. But compressing the way they do is an outrage. It makes their music sound cheap and fatiguing on better equipment.

It was part of the style of the album, apparently. They wanted it to sound like a radio, so they compressed it to fuck and completely cut up the high end too. Maybe it's a subtle ironic commentary on the state of radio today. "Songs for the deaf" and all that.
Listen to the drum track on First it Giveth, they've completely murdered it. It sounds like someone's drumming on a table with some pencils. Heh. For long you live and high you fly, but only if you ride the tide, and balanced on the biggest wave you race towards an early grave. |Musicbrainz|Audioscrobbler|last.fm| |
