Do you schedule music or do your deejays do that?
Hi all,
I was wondering... Now I know how it works in the real world... A music director will use a software package such as RCS Selector to schedule music that goes into the software that runs the system which in turn plays the scheduled music and the deejay just fills in the voice or makes small changes as required. but how do you do it on an online station? Now I'm not talking about stations who have only the owner as a deejay and everything is always off the same computer but for those of you who have deejays from around the world. What I've been accustomed too, is each deejay comes on with their show. Some stations may adhere to a format and others don't. My station is quite new and it doesn't adhere to a format per say. Although it seems to lean towards rock and classic rock with some Top 40 sprinkled in and one Punk Rock Show(ok it doesn't lean nowhere does it :-) Anyways, I'm trying to decide if that is the best way to do it. Or should I be scheduling music and then sending the playlists to my deejays to play or what??? I'm just not sure what the norm is. I take it stations like Hitzradio are more organized with a preprogrammed playlist but I don't know if I want to go that far. Just curious how you do it really... Thx, Drew Hosick THE ALLEY RADIO www.thealleyradio.com |

At SpinFM, certain songs do play over others depending on whether or not it is a new release and how hot it is on the market.
We don't have jocks from around the world, but they're all on the east coast (NYC/ATL) where an executive can supervise and provide aid. The jocks at our station must broadcast at a specific bit rate, speak in a certain tone and also play the songs given to them by their producer. This way we stay organized. Only during shows is usually when we air a pre-programmed playlist: the rest is automated by weight rotation. I would recommend you choose a specific format and stick to it. Playing an eclectic genre will soon tune out most of your listeners because there's no consistency. ((YOU PICK. WE PLAY.)) ((YOU PICK. WE PLAY.)) w w w . y o u p i c k w e p l a y . c o m |

I'd like to hear from others, but would you mind if I used your post in a meeting with my deejays, you really put my thoughts into words on this one with the last sentence or two.
Now does your station air a few shows a week that may be out of format a bit? An example would be, two slots a week that may play a punk rock show while most of the week is Mainstream Rock Format? |

Sure you can.
When you consider programming your station with a Punk Rock show, you should put it in an appropriate time slot. The most appropriate would probably be a low-traffic day (Tues/Wed) after 10PM. You don't want to disrupt your normal programming (Mainstream Rock) to give your listeners something they don't want to hear at work, school or home during the day. I hope this helps.

I have to Agree with Pioneer here. We also are compeletly formatted and Automated. I the program director chose the music daily and I also check to make sure that played.
