XP Permissions are driving me crazy!

After this mess:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....mited+accounts
I've had to (up for debate) reformat and reinstall xp pro and upgraded (also up for debate )to sp2.

I'm now setting my family to run on a limited user account rather than administrator, but am having problems for my brother to run ICQ.

I have the simple file sharing unchecked, and have gone and set their limited account up for writing and reading to the ICQ folder found in c:\prog...\icq and all subfolders, but I still get an error in their account, saying that they need to ask the admin (me!) for write priv.'s.

But I thought that I set that already!

Send a message via ICQ to General Geoff Send a message via AIM to General Geoff
You'd need to let them write to some other dlls and such to run ICQ. I'm not sure exactly what, but I thought a default limited user account could launch apps with no problem.

I've found this:
Quote:
In administrater mode
run regedt32.exe

Open key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID

Create the key with name {F04F50AF-8379-40B0-B22B-A60CB82E0DA3}
// when copy and paste make sure there are no space at the beginning or end

Open key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F04F50AF-8379-40B0-B22B-A60CB82E0DA3}
and create the String value with name "Default"

Go to the security (permissions) dialog for key {F04F50AF-8379-40B0-B22B-A60CB82E0DA3} and append USER.

Set to USER only "read" permission.

Go to the "Advanced..." button and set ALL the permissions except "Delete".
Does it sound like trouble?

NB. This is ShyShy's husband typing =)

ICQ probably writes to some obscure files in \WINDOWS so I'd suggest that you check on the ICQ website to see exactly which files are accessed when ICQ is run, then give access to those files/folders.

Either that or change the accounts to admin or power user, and literally (verbally) tell your family members, DON'T INSTALL NO SHIT ON THE COMPUTER, YO.

The problem is that they probably wouldn't know when they are actually installing the shit. "In order to view this page you must install the activeX control." Click!

Well, that registry crap I posted above worked.
Anyone know why?
Have I opened the security door any farther than I have to?
