Size Of The Internet

Is it just me, or has the internet grown so quickly in the past few years that good resources are usually buried in piles of mediocre ones? I've gone off in search of particular kinds of sites many times, only to go to three mediocre, hidden websites before I find an obscure site on the other side of the moon that has more stuff than I'd dreamed of when I started. It seems like much of the best content goes wasted simply because people can't spend the hours necessary to find the cool, competent websites that are actually worth visiting.

Many times I'll find a great, very useful site on a friend's computer and then completely forget the address--and never find it again. Google and the like do not even begin to help. My only working method is to go to a popular-type site, then use their links to links to links to websites that exist seemingly outside the borders of searchability.

Has anyone else noticed this, or found a resource that helps?
