That depends on your service provider. More often than not, cable providers do not give out dynamic IPs.

Dude he obviously doesn't know what that means
Oppy, with a cable connection your IP only changes every so often. |

With most cable connections the IP is given out dynamically but you usually get the same one every time unless you change the mac address of the device that plugs into the cable modem (i.e. plug it into a different network card or router). THis is not a hard and fast rule, just somehting that i have noticed with cable connections.

The real issue here is how long is the DHCP lease that controls how long you are allowed to keep a particular IP. For example, many ISPs give a 2 to 3 day lease time -- what this means is that your PC or router will not attempt to renew the IP until 1/2 of the lease time -- if it does that before the ISPs lease time expires, it will keep the same IP -- so if you're always on, and your the router, or PC that get's the IP is not turned off for 2 to three days, you will most likely keep the same IP indefinitely -- if you or the ISP has a problem that either causes the ISP to reset their DHCP server, or you to lose connectivity with the DHCP server, or you change the hardware that connects to the ISP [causing the MAC address to change] -- you will probably get a different IP -- the other time when getting a new IP is likely is when the device that is maintaining the DHCP lease with the ISP specifically "releases" the IP long enough for another person to request a fresh IP.
The point is, the IP you get can stay the same for months at a time, and it can change in an instant -- it is not really under your control, but you do have to be aware that it can happen. With respect to SHOUTcasting -- the DNAS will gracefully recover from an IP change, but if you have links lying around [like here] with your raw IP, those links will become stale and no longer work when your IP changes. Even if you think you don't need it, getting a dynamic DNS for your IP will keep you available no matter what you IP changes to -- this will save you from a lot of pain when your IP inevitably changes. |

I use www.no-ip.com, Free, 3 DNS names or redirects, plus a free update client download. The domain choices suit broadcasting well, ie, servemp3.com, etc...

what he meant to say was: Cable ISP's don't generally give out static IPs.. static means "never changes"... Nice description there, DJ SpinnerCee :-) As DJ SpinnerCee suggests, its the nature of the beast of how DHCP works... DjZ
