Guinea Pig Kids

Quote:
"We were told that if they were vomiting, if they lost their ability to walk, if they were having diarrhoea, if they were dying, then all of this was because of their HIV infection."

In fact it was the drugs that were making the children ill and the children had been enrolled on the secret trials without their relatives' or guardians' knowledge.
This is really sad, it's like a type or torture. Guinea Pig Kids

I'm disgusted, but it doesn't really surprise me. Makes you wonder if you're really taking all those pills to get better though.

Indeed not that surprising.

Of course you're always told that these things would never happen again.

I can't believe it.
Maybe it goes as far to the top as to Giuliani and the current mayor. I'd like to see a lot of people go down.

I'm right behind you.

Oh you can bet there is going to be some legal action. The ACS and Incarnation will not be allowed to sweep this one under the rug.

God damn bastards.

Found the article that this thread reminded me of.

ACS in New York, Protective Services in Detroit, DFACS in Atlanta, etc., etc. They all have way too much power and they are not afraid to abuse that power.

The problem is, when people try to remove that power, they are labeled as standing up for child abusers - political suicide.

The good part about this, is that it is out in the open now and maybe some people will start to question more their authority. But funny how this article comes out on the bbc and not american press. wish i could do something more.

Why? Things like that happen all the time and they are reported in our papers. How many hours a day do you spend reading the local papers in the US, so you know what is or is not published?

Maybe you only read the 'National' paper: USA Today, which, by the way, doesn't have local news in it. (It is a fucking joke, I really hope that is not where you get your news.) Or maybe you read a paper from one city so you don't see the local news for other cities.

My point is this: the US is a real big area to cover in one newspaper or one news broadcast. It would most likely take you all of your waking hours to read all of the news generated in the WHOLE United States even if you had someone discarding the duplicate stories.

How can you say that stories don't get published? Are you privy to some inside info that I am not?

Sorry for going on a rant, but sometimes I get tired of hearing a line of shit about Americans not being informed. Sounds like others are just as mis-informed about us.

Yes, you're right, and I sympathise with you getting sick of it. It's not that I read American news sources. I often go to Google news and find stuff off random nespapers, often American ones, but there is so much in European news about manipulation of the US media and concealment of the facts, for instance revolving around the elections, Fox News and the NY Times scandal, that it simply gives me the impression that I'd rather find out what's going on in your country from a British newspaper than an American paper.

It's the same with Peru, the papers are shit, they have little or no opinion and are often manipulated by the politicians. So I get news about my country from Google news. I think Americans believe they are freer than they really are and that their government is "nicer" than it really is. I'm biased, I know, and I'm not going to conceal that I despise many of the policies of your country. If you ask me about mine you'll find the politics are way dirtier. The difference is that they don't directly affect the rest of the world.

Maybe my comment was a bit out of hand. But the fact that the BBC, a foreign news company, did all the investigating... doesn't that seem a bit odd?

Not really, there could be many reasons they 'picked up' on this story. Maybe the reporter happened to talk to someone involved, or maybe he happened on it some other way. It may, in fact, have been reported here too. I don't know. I don't pretend to know.

I do know this... I read the Atlanta paper. It doesn't have very much news from the rest of the US. When it does it is always dirt. When I lived in Detroit, it was the same there. In both cases there were always 'human interest' stories that were local 'good news' items. I grew up in Detroit. The only way I now hear about anything good happening there is if I talk to friends or relatives still living there, or if the story is so big, that it becomes national news.

Judging from the size of the Atlanta and Detroit papers, if all of the local news from every major US city was added to a 'national paper' you would have a stack of newsprint about a foot or two high every day. Add to that all of the news from the small towns... maybe you can see my point.

The only things you're going to hear in other countries are the major stories... those deemed newsworthy enough to make the cut. It will most likely be dirt.

As far as the US news media being slanted, Yep. ALL news agencies are slanted - even those European ones that you hold dear to your heart. We are well aware of the spin in ours... maybe the European news agencies need to spell it out over there because it may not be apparent to someone that doesn't live here.

Just don't use a gun in the process or some bonehead like Ertmann will call you uncivilized. I sure hope you or anybody else never has to die protecting a family member, but anybody that's too chicken to do so doesn't deserve a family.

Not really. I can name many scenarios where it isn't worth saving a family member.

You have a point Bilbo but at the same time children have rights too. Their legal guardians should have been notified and given a choice.

It all just pisses me off. What happend to the childrens rights? Where was a law guardian for them? What are we doing as a society here? Basically these poor defenceless children that started out life in a really shitty way were treated like sewer rats. Instead of helping them and giving them a chance they were dragged down even farther.

Yes, I agree, all newspapers will have some degree of spin. But governmental manipulation is a different matter. I honestly believe no newspaper in the UK is influenced by the government. If they were they'd quickly lose business. In other countries this does happen, I know it happens in Peru, and I am of the opinion that it happens in the US.

Found this link, looks like US media hasn't done much to bring this tragedy more to the forfront like it should be. Because, until this thread was originally posted, I had not heard a single thing about this case.
