It's the same as with your other dogs skin. The key is going to be getting all the buttons and stuff in there and looking good. Judging from the poker skin, I'd say you have a pretty good shot of having this one come out great too.

This is somthing i found on http://www.winampunlimited.com it really burns my ass.

Quote:
I really can’t get over this Dogs Playing Poker Classic Skin. On one hand, it’s tacky looking and fits no possible theme or appearance you’ve setup for your computer. On the other hand, it’s Dogs. Playing. Poker.
But at the same respect. I feel that he may be right. it didn't come out exactly how i would of liked it too. So i may be taking this towards a slightly different approach. And may reconsider redoing the poker skin when i get around to it. My goal is to have this skin completely original as possible. Without the alternatives cause everything started going down hill towards the boat painting and the license plates.

Were see what happens.

/Edit Least with the wooden background i got more to work with and wont make the same mistake. I hope.

"Fitting a desktop theme" has never been something I aspire to do. That said, never try to publish a skin like that at customize.org. Some of them can be very mean, because it's a theme-based site. I don't know anything about winampunlimited.
I don't quite understand what you're saying you'll do differently, but do what you think looks good.

What i meant by differently is it should be more original. Fitting a desktop theme isn't exactly my main concern at all far as that goes. But he is right it is abit tacky. What with the blue and all the green. And no, No doubt about it. I'm gonna do what i feel looks good.

Pay no attention to what other people say or think, you should do what you feel works best.

Personally I loved dogs playing poker, and I can't wait for dogs playing pool, specially as it was me that asked for it originally in your other thread

pffft, mine was a suggestion not a request

/oh oh , and here is another suggestion, see if you can get that light a little bit higher up so that it sit's fully in the titlebar area so that when the title bar is active the light comes on and when it's inactive the light goes off, that'd be neat.

And I could think of a great easter egg you could work into that as well

However, please feel free to ignore my suggestions and do as you see fit

What's the problem with that quote? It's a compliment. He's saying that even though it's such an unusual theme which is totally at odds with most people's overall desktop appearance, he thinks it's cool because he loves the dogs-playing-poker theme. Why does that burn your arse?

It kinda reminds me of all the "it's great, even though I would never use it" comments I get on some of my weirder skins. A compliment, yes, but it gets annoying.

If you find that annoying, then you should start making skins that more people would be willing to use Am I saying that you should start making different types of skins? No - I'm saying that you should stop finding it annoying. Many skins are just like that - interesting, but not very good for day-to-day use (and certainly not for those who like to coordinate the themes of all their applications). I feel exactly the same way about some of my skins; I like them, but I barely ever actually use them. I think that comments like that are to be expected.

See, it's weird, I make skins I like to use. I wish more people skinned like me so that I'd find more usable skins Basically, it makes me wonder why I bother to make skins that work; I could just draw a picture of the skin if people are going to just look at it and say "hey that's cool."
Customize.org bothers me because it's full of boring, boring skins. Yay, more whitish plastic! http://www.customize.org/list/winamp2

I know this would make all of them have to be the same color, but could you not make the eq sliders into balls, or the ends of cues that hit a ball instead of whatever those things are on there?

You thought I was dead, didn't you?

Me personaly i like skins with character. Although, Now that i think of it "this is a painting" It is meant to be hung on a wall. Right? If you wanna look at it from somebody elses aspect. They can keep their boring "whitish plastic" Only thing that burnt my ass was he mentioned it was tacky. But let's all put that beside us now. Can we do that. :|

/edit to tydogg

Im not sure if i'm following you. Correct me if i'm wrong. You want me to remove the balls? Theres no possible way i could do that without jepordising the overall theme. and the sliders are just stamps nothing more.

No, I want you to either make the sliders the balls themselves, or cues which could hit the balls and make them move, cause those stamps don't seem like they fit.

Oh, i see what you're saying and believe me i've thought of it of it in advance. BUT, It throws the realism all out of proportion. You could kiss the scrapes and the spinning motion of the balls good bye aswell. And the multiple cues would give it the same affect basically. I couldn't do it.

You've got a valid point on the rest, but it makes me chuckle when you refer to a skin about dogs playing pool having realism. Sorry, I must be tired

I totally know what you mean. But when you're working on your computer, and quickly turn to winamp to adjust your music, you want to be able to do it as effortlessly as possible and get back to your work. You don't always want to sit there trying to decipher the intentions of the skinner: what the symbols in some wacky PL stacks might mean, or whether a little cartoon character with his hand up means that shuffle is on, or that shuffle is off.

Usually when you make potentially ambigious components on your own skins, it seems very clear to you, but that's because (a) you spent hours on it so you know it like the back of your hand, and (b) you've employed your sense of logic to make them - but they rarely seem as clear to other users.

That's why ripe is probably my favourite ever skinner. He is as original as anyone has ever been with winamp, yet the interface of his skins is always just a solid, logical interface. He doesn't let his artistic license get in the way of the interface - I wish I could say that about many of my skins!

Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.

You want a skin that throws realism out the window, see my highway skin. Half of the parts were looking dead on and half were viewed from 100 feet in the air looking down.

Instead of having the dogs playing pool as the picture hanging over the vis area, why don't you have the dogs playing poker one instead.

might be tricky to integrate that with numbers and vis bars, but probably not impossible...

You know i thought about that and having the "dogs playing pool" in the "dogs playing poker". It's a good idea but i wouldn't beable to stretch it out to fit the frame. Well, far as i know.

But in particularly for now im talking about the labels and the controls. Somthing has to be done alittle differently with them. I think i just need some sleep. im burnt out.

Ok, few ideas to toss at you...

How about for the mono/stero and eq/pl toggle button areas you put something like a scorechart or something in that area, pretty sure you could get a square frame to fit around that area all in one go, and then work within that area to integrage your toggle buttons/indicators.., something like a wooden frame, with say a blackboard style interior to it, the buttons and indicators could then be done in a chalk / handwritten style, seen these things quite often in pubs and what have you, you could make it look like it's hanging off the wall behind the table and dogs, it's not in the original image, but hey you gotta take a few artistic liberties right?

Your play buttons are gonna be a real pain in the ass to work in, I like what you have done with pause/stop/eject, but that's not gonna work for the others as you've no doubt found out, I was going to suggest a strip running along the back that had text indicators on for the buttons, but that's not going to work either.

Will the red dog that is currently sitting over where the >> button goes move along slightly so that you can get that button in ?, you don't have much room to move it however...

Failing that, can you get another dog in on the act to sit over the pause/stop buttons ?, you would then have to work out some clever way of integrating buttons into their facial expressions, much like you did on the poker skin.

Playlist window is gonna be a mother fucker to integrate, don't really have many ideas for what you could do with that, maybe some kind of wooden frame effect, at least it would fit in with the general feel of the skins.

I'll have another think later see what springs to mind...

I should start watching the pool competitions on ESPN, Get some ideas.

Mm, A score chart you say. THAT COULD WORK. Im gonna use that. What i meant by the controls are the additional buttons. Not the cbuttons, i think i intergated them fairly nicely. However, I'm gonna attempt to intergate some labels in them. For instants a scar or tattoo possibly facial expressions just arn't gonna work on these. I wonder if you can tell the difference between a scar and a tattoo. Anyhow, the playlist should be fairly easy. I have wood and gold frames in mind to give it that more classic feel. I might change the cbuttons to gold aswell if it turns out. and those equalizer buttons differently needs to go except for the sliders. I think i've grown attached to them.

That just leaves the shuffle and the repeat button now. Im gonna goto bed and think about it.

Thanks that helps.

/I wonder if you can make cursors in paint shop pro.

Probably not, but I bet if you made the file and saved it out as a psd file one of the kind skinners around here might come along and convert it in photoshop for you, Luigi had a plugin a while back that I found for him that did just that, I'm sure if you sweet talk him he might convert it for you

I think he was saying the same thing you said earlier, Jones. The redundant mini-painting is redundant. Much like his redundant comment. I do agree with the sentiment, though. And I don't like the fact that the vis is gonna cut off half the picture instead of smoothly replacing it.

Yes, but beware some OS's (think it was windows ME) don't like bigger than regular cursors, I think it was flatmatt who pointed that out to me a while back in some other thread.
