I realized that 75% of the music I listen to is from my parents' generation, and the current stuff is just filler in comparison. Does anyone else feel the same way? Do you think music gets better with age, like in 50 years people will be praising bands like Staind?

The truth is, the current mainstream's been crap for at least 10 years. Which begs the question, did 80's & 90's kids have better taste than 00's kids? The labels wouldn't create boy bands day after day if people didn't buy it.
Staind are a modern mainstream band, as you say, FILLER! Personally I wouldn't fill the hole in my bum with it. The indie scene's as vibrant as ever...... Man's ability to make good music is timeless, you just have to turn your back on the crap. |

Boy bands! That's what I'm going to listen to when I'm old and moldy, if only because senility is the only thing that could make me listen to them.

Re: when we're older what will we listen to?
Quote:
if I had to listen to my fathers taste in music, it would be country and Elvis all day long ( no thank you ) by the time i will be old and grey ( yep old en grey as i already am turning grey on top) i'll continue to listen to what i am listening today. Progressive rock and darkwave topped with a slight piece of 80's (almost sounds like a tastefull dish )As I am not listening to anything my father likes , I do get my Son into the music I like , he has grown a taste for Darkwave and gothic ( not so hard to imagine when it's all he hears comming from the 4.1 surround) Lets just digg up this thread in 25 years to see if we did see the future for yourselves. |

I believe music has to evolve. Well it's obvios really. Both society, and music evolve with each other.
I love old music, as it paved the way for much of the newer music we see today. If it wasn't for the composers, music would be a lot different. All that I can say is that, music is here to be appraciated, and not thrown away through opinionated beflifes. I don't think there is much use in trying to forsee what we might be listening to, I just say we should let it take it's path. hmm I don't think music really gets better with age. I think some music might be "ahead of its time" however. Some music might reimerge and make into current musical styles. For example hip-hop and people like Dj Shadow and David Holmes find the rarest and most awesome things from 70s funk era and music from india or Beck where he put bluegrass and hip-hop together.
Take classical for instance, I don't think that has become better with age, its just a symbol of the period when it was most popular (or really "newest"). Music is more a timepeice than a style. Hell pretty much anything creative (art, poetry, music) doesn't get better with age. Its best in all times

Many people get stuck on what they spent their early years (<30) listening to. But also, many will keep including new music, up to about 10-20% of everything they prefer.
But there could be a lot of variance too. My dad, for instance, loves old music he heard growing up, plus a lot of progressive rock, electronica and techno, including the (rare but) occasional new release. So when I'm old, I'll probably listen to the things I've listened to most of my life so far...Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush, The Police and some others. But at age 80, I'm sure I'll also be tuned into a music station transmitted from another planet in the solar system via a digital subspace ultrawave transharmonic carrier signal, and will find that I occasionally like some new bits of music all through my elder years. "Hey, is that music I hear coming from Uranus?" I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash. |

Haha, music from Uranus.
Do you think that is the classic rock like Led Zeppelin and the Doors just had its lyrics replaced with crap about bling and violence and shit, would more kids listen to it today, and maybe even come to realize that what's currently on the airwaves is hardly even music? |

That's an interesting concept, but I don't think they would.
I think the music of bygone eras can only be appreciated by people who heard and liked it when it was new, or who have a natural affinity for it even if it's before their time. For instance I know a lot of teenagers today who love classic rock...many here, even (taylormemer, Raz, and others). As time passes and we age, I think we "hold on" to what we grew up with, up to around age 30 or so, then we still let in some new stuff over time as well. About 80% of what we like is the music that shaped our musical tastes (or newer music that's similar enough to it), and the remaining 20% is the new stuff we'll accept and like even as we grow older. The percentages will vary a lot between people, but I think those are the averages (or close, anyway). I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash. |

I figured it would be safer than 50-50 or 90-10.

I'll be listening to the same thing I am now - I'll just have to turn it up louder.
Can you imagine the old grey haired guy on the porch but instead of listening to Sinatra he's jamming out on Pantera? Megarock Radio - St. Louis Since 1998! Don't click this link! Corporate Radio Sucks! No suits, all rock! |
