setting up my own server
I want to setup Shoutcast Streaming on my own server. now either i'm really dumb or i can't find it in here, lol, but can someone kinda talk me through it? or provide me with a string for the post that talks about it? i want to stream using Shoutcast from my own dedicated server. actually, i'm streaming from one computer to my shoutcast server and then it allows listeners to listen through the server. make sense? or am i an idiot? from what i've read about shoutcast, it's free right? i just need to set it up right with the right plugins and something about DNS, LOL. can someone be a mentor and help me? thanks!

Download the actual server program for your OS onto your dedicated server (http://www.shoutcast.com/download/serve.phtml)
Then, on the computer you wish to broadcast from, install the winamp plugin found here.. http://www.shoutcast.com/download/broadcast.phtml Configure your server (read the readme!), and then configure the plugin with your servers IP, password and stream information, etc. I hope this helps, though it's more to get an idea of what exactly you need help with. Note that the pages I linked for you to download from give a quick overview of how to set them up. |

thank you so much. i've downloaded the shoutcast application for our linux server. so then just unzip and install and configure? then on my streaming computer, plug in the right ports and i'm good to go right? do i need to put plugins on the server? or are those included in the server application?

The server program just relays what you send it. You don't need any plugins on the linux box. Read the links a bit, they'll explain the configuration settings -- once you have those to your liking, move on to configure the plugin.
Now for the plugin -- go to winamp, chose shoutcast as your active DSP (in options). -- Output Tab -- Address: set this to the IP that your shoutcast server (on linux) is bound to in the settings there. Port: set this to the port the server is bound to.. default is 8000. password: set this to your server's password. encoder: leave this at one, or another if you prefer.. remember the number you chose, though. Your reconnect settings are a matter of opinion, really. -- Encoder tab -- In the encoder box, chose the number that you used in the output settings. Encoder type should be MP3. Encoder settings are completely up to you, I use 128kbps, 44.1kHz, stereo -- but this might not be the right option for you. Just remember that the higher the bitrate you use, the better it will sound but fewer people will be able to listen in. -- Input Tab -- Input depends on what you're doing. If you're doing a live show and/or running through a mixer, you'll want to chose soundcard input. If you're leaving winamp open with a playlist of MP3s, just leave this option set to winamp. |

fantastic, thanks! we're actually not using winamp to stream to but an encoder from audiorealm which uses shoutcast technology. so if that's alreday setup just put in server port number, and everything else is gravy huh? AWESOME! thanks for your help here. i really appreciat eit.

SAM? I use it too, just figured that you'd be using winamp. Glad to hear I could help, maybe the plugin info will be useful to someone else searching in the future!

ok, another question... when searching for a server, obviously unlmiited bandwidth is necessary, but what about transfer rate? does a 128 kbps stream REALLY transmit 128kb every second? is it more? is it less? if i have a transfer rate of 20megabit/sec, that's only enough for 160 listeners if my math is right? am i right? so i gotta find one with 100megabits per second, OR MORE right?
anyone know of any good server companies offering dedicatesd servers along with dedicated fibers to each machine? thanks! LT |

How do I calculate the capacity of a dedicated box for shoutcast hosting?
I'm not talking about the bandwidth but the cpu and memory required. Specifically, I'm trying to determine how many concurrent listeners a box such as an AMD Athlon 3200+ could handle broadcasting a single 24Kbs stream and the optimum RAM required to maximize the number of concurrent listeners. |
