Configuration Question

I'm trying to set up a little radio using Winamp/SHOUTcast.

I want it to be able to stream off of my Soundcard but also pick up what I say into my microphone. So far I've got the Input Device set to 'Soundcard Input' and the Soundcard Mixer set to 'Microphone'. I have the button labled 'LOCK' pressed down so that I'm always talking and such. The problem is that nobody hears anything except for me talking. They don't hear the music and stuff. I'm using a headset so maybe it has to do with my control panel sound configuration. If any of you guys have any ideas how to set it up so that I can stream my voice + sound such as music or other people talking to me at the same time please let me know.

I don't really know too much about using the soundcard and push to talk stuff, but I do know that when I use a real mixer, the only thing my audience will hear is an input that's turned on [I guess that would be "checked" in a WinMixer] and the slider turned up...

Nowm I know that the Windoows "record" mixer breaks all the rules by [sometimes] only letting you select one input at a time -- this idiot-proof feature will force you to use the doofy "What you hear" or "Stereo Mix" if you need to use more than one "input" simultaneously -- that will cause your Win output mixer to be the brains of the operation.

A stupid way to do it, but it may be the only way.

Hmmm, let me try to rephrase the question because your answer didn't click with me.

I use a headset; I want to stream from my soundcard so that people can hear everything I hear (IE people talking to me and such via Ventrilo/Skype + the music coming from my computer). How do I make it so? Maybe that was a bit more clear... :P

I think I got it right -- Are you familiar with the two mixers -- when you are "near" the soundcard input in the DSP there's an "Open Mixer" button -- the mixer that will open should be the record mixer -- if you open the output mixer at the same time [dbl-clk the spkr on the taskbar] you should see that they are different -- on 99% of Windows PCs, the record mixer has a VU next to the Master level.

All of the volume controls are up; none of them are muted. I still can't hear anything other than me talking when I have it set to Soundcard Input. I think it has something to do with the Control Panel Sound & Audio Setup Options.

I don't exactly know what you're talking about... the only Mixer I see is the one labled 'Open Mixer' next to the Input options on the SHOUTcast.

On that mixer, it shows Speaker, Wave, SW Synth, CD Player, and Microphone. All of those are set pretty high.

The mixer I can open from Shoutcast and the mixer I can bring up from the speaker symbol in the taskbar are the same ones.. heh.

OK -- there are two Windows Mixers -- While you have the one Mixer you "see" open, click Options, Properties.... -- then click Adjust Volume for Recording -- this should change the mixer you had open into the record mixer -- It should look a bit different -- see the VU level meter? It should also have different inputs "checked" -- to get the whole picture, leave that Mixer open, and click "Open Mixer" in WinAMP again -- compare the two.

The record mixer will control what is broadcast via your ShoutCAST.

Ah, after bringing up the Record mixer which option do I select for recording? Microphone? Line In? Wave Out?

Select the ones you want -- You should be able to select more than one -- MP3s playing in a WinAMP playlist will be "heard" when Wave is selected and turned up, and the MIC, well you know...

If the record mixer will not let you select more than one..., look for "what U hear" or "Stereo Mix" -- if you see neither, go to options, properties... and make sure that either of the above is not "unchecked" in the list of "record" inputs.

If you don't find any of that stuff, your soundcard may not be able to do what you want to do.

Those are the options with checkboxes listed shown under my 'Recording' mixer.

Somebody else told me to look for 'what u hear' but I have no idea where to find that...

Wave Out Mix may be a Synonym for "what you hear" etc... Try that [the output mixer will give you the input control in this case].

You didn't say if you can select [check] more than one input on the record mixer itself. If you can, you won't find [and don't need] the others. Then all you have to do is select MIC and Wave, and talk while the music is playing -- you'll hear both.

Then go to the "output" mixer -- make sure that there the MIC and Wave are also checked.

OK. I think I see why it isn't working, but I don't know how to fix it.

1) I use a headset.
2) Under recording options on the mixer FOR THE HEADSET the only box is 'Microphone'; there's nothing there pertaining to wave out or what I hear.
3) The only way to get to the wave out stuff is to go into the recording options for my SOUNDCARD and enable Wave Out Max there.
4) Well, since I don't use anything except this USB headset the whole SOUNDCARD thing isn't working.
5) I've gotten nowhere with this; all I know is that when I set it to Soundcard INPUT and choose the Push to Talk option all they can hear is the stuff my microphone picks up. (IE: My voice, typing, whatever is going on around me.)

VERY frusterating.

You may not be able to use the USB headset to "monitor" what's going to your stream -- but make no mistake -- the record mixer is conrolling what is going there.

If I were you, I would het a set of real headphones, and plub them into the speaker out on your soundcard, and plug a real MIC into the MIC input of your soundcard, and try again.

USB is a "hack" -- many times it does not work the way real traditional devices work, this is true for audio devices, and expecially when you try to use USB as a network device -- Your SoundCard only knows what's plugged into IT, Some USB audio devices only use USB for power [most speakers for instance], if your USB is sending audio though the USB interface, you may have to take extra steps to make it work with ShoutCAST -- I would check the documentation for the device, to see if it created yet another mixer device that you may need to select before you can control its output.

I would also look at both mixers [options, preferences...] again -- you may be missing something -- at least once, "check" every input, so that you see them all -- the USB MIC may be there [under a rediculous name].

Your headphones may also part of be the problem -- At least once, try using standard gear before trying the USB -- this will get you familiar with the operation of the mixers.

Yea, I'm convinced that it's not possible to do what I want to do using a USB headset. The stream can't connect to the headset since it's in no way related to the soundcard.

Thanks anyways, I'll try to get a non-USB headset.

Dear both, I am new to this and I have the opposite problem. My sounds are going through but when I talk into the microphone, no one can hear me? I checked that the microphone is working and it is (not USB). Can either of you tell me how to set it up so people can hear my voice and the music at the same time? many thanks in hope. Stella
