After Hours (bands you wish would split......)

Starting with:

Elastica

They were decent back in 1995, but they keep coming back with 2-bit EP's and bucket-loads of radio sessions (90% of which is trollop).

Call it a day girls......

Axl Rose just needs to end his Guns N' Roses dream...Move on; You're living an endless dream with a band that's virtually no more, and you shouldn't even bother with that stupid "Chinese Democracy" album...Goddamn, probably isn't even anywhere near what Axl had in mind of what it would sound like from years ago...

Deeder, you suck. A$$.

Metallica....partially agree, their break should've been a lot longer. But SOAD... heck, they're the only ORIGINAL and quality metal band these days, and I have yet to see a bad album by them. If you have something against the genre, shut up and make a choice that's not biased by your genre preferences. Or choose some bands that define the suckiness of the genre. Like, say, umm... HIM or... Nightwish.

Linkin Park.

Just about every kiddie pop punk band.

Aaaand, BSB should've stayed split up. Forever.

I'd agree with Metallica and System of a Down. Metallica I've started to hate ever since that orchestral album (a good idea but sounded like crap to me) and the more albums SoaD puts out the more I dislike them. Their first CD kicked ass, as did the second. After that it's been a slow slide downhill.

on the otherhand, im finding it very hard not to be extremely offended by Doggy Dog saying that Nightwish define the suckiness of its genre. Nightwish are awesome! (in my opinion)

I like the idea, in a way, I love the idea of mixing rock/metal with elements classical music ever since I heard Deep Purple's "with-orchestra" album (and I prefer some S&M Metallica songs to their originals (For Whom The Bell Tolls for example). I like Terja's (spelling?) voice. The band's ok. But the lyrics just suck. For example...take Stargazers. Love the song, but the lyrics are a load of crap.

SOAD.... I never had the chance to hear the first album. I loved Toxicity. I was lukewarm about Steal This Album. There were some good songs, but I could see why most of them didn't end up on a proper album (and I think that the Innervision album version is inferior to the single version, cos the guitar players singing in the album version put me off). Mezmerize is it seems, a love it or hate it album. I love it, I know people who love it, and I also know SOAD fans that hate it. And I can see why. The music is slower, the Armenian influence is gone, and the guitar player sings. B.Y.O.B. can not be compared to the singles from the first album in any way. It's simply inferior. But the album is simply....very good music, and the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. What I've noticed, that most people have the same reaction when they hear it. And it's "Eh?". Then, depending on the person, the more those people listen to the album, they love it or hate it more..

It'd be nice if all nu-metal ceased, also emo & punk-pop.

Oh, you can add death-metal.

Nu-metal should have never happened.

Emo & punk-pop had their moments (depending on what one would call emo/punk-pop of course).

And death metal?
I don't know, maybe one would just have to pay more attention to hear the subtle differences between acts and songs to appreciate the wealth of intricate minute details contained in their different ways of going "grrrooaarr!!!".

Life's too short for such experimentation. Somone once told me the difference between black and death metal - the former's fast and frightening, the latter has grumbled (clearing of the throat) vocals. I bet it took years of refinement for these genres to evolve.

As for punk-pop, no evolution whatsoever. Almost every band sounds the same (well, they all sound like........ Green Day)? I've tried to get into one of these bands (almost succeeded with "A New Found Glory"), but no, it ain't happening. If you've got Mega City Four or Boyracer, you don't need the shite.

Sidenote....... there's nothing more satisfying than ripping the shit out of a "Jimmy Eat World" fan. When you've had your fun introduce them to post-punk and their whole collection becomes obsolete.

So, what are some good punk-pop bands?

Mega City Four
Buzzcocks
Wipers

As I said it depends on what you call punk-pop, whether it's used to describe all bands whose songs work in a pop as well as in a punk sense or just those MTV-Punk bands.

I was referring to those who followed in the wake of Green Day. You know the type, tins on the beach after school (comparing dick tattoos, dancing with rubber sharks, wet t-shirts and all that). I wouldn't mind, only handfuls of these bands appear on the NME chart show alongside the likes of Bloc Party. It's as if you've changed channels.

There was an 80's band called "Naked Raygun", far superior stuff.

If Metallica wusses out on their next album - yes.

Then I'd have to name about 1,000 pop acts. Britney, Christina and the new crop of teenie's Lindsay Lohan and that Lizzie McGuire chick too. They all just get on my f'ing nerves. Linkin Park needs to go because rap-rock has already died off and they need to as well.

Eh

I mean, I still liked the album..."Some Kind of Monster", "Frantic", "My World" were some of the songs I liked..."Dirty Window" was the few I felt was really half-assed...

They say their next album will be more like the Black Album...

I don't care what it sounds like; As long as it doesn't give into the nu-metal "no solo" trend like "St. Anger" unfortunatly fell into...

That doesn't really exist anymore, now it's a catch all catagory. Every time an Alternative Metal band does something odd it gets lumped in as new metal, true Nu Metal was the rap rock fusion unless I'm wrong.

If you listen to the remix of "Breathe On Me" by the excellent Jacques Lu Cont (who worked recently with New Order), you can hear a potential direction for her: doing "voice-over" singing on downtempo/upbeat well-produced electronica. Also, in that context, her lyrics appear much less dire than they sometimes are (you don't usually pay the same attention to a dance track lyric than to a pop/rock song lyric). Anyway, that was my "lost cause" of the day

About bands who should call it a day, unsurprisingly, I would say The Cure. This story is just dragging along now, as sad as it is.

Smith's doing himself no favours. The only people who still think they're cool are the Austrians (the same people who worship David Hasslehoff).

Whilst on the subject......

New Order are stragglers, not only that Bernard's become unsightly on stage. They could reform Electronic, The Other Two & Monaco and leave NO to the annals of rock history. Or, they could tour the country for years to come as an 80's tribute band.

Britney??? She can be as good as she likes, but the stigma's still there. Like Kylie, she had a good phase 2-3 years ago, but her crimes against music in the 80's will never be forgotten......

It's your typical "Bon Jovi vs GNR" stance.

Outlaw's right though, Axel F (or whatever his name is) ranks as one of the most irritating individuals ever to pick up a mic.

It just proves there is no god.....

If I stumble on the secret of time-travel, I'll buy the teeange Axel his own remote pacific island (complete with pigmy tribe).

Axl Rose is just an arrogant cock...He's your typical rock band lead singer who becomes corrupted after having a taste of national success and tries to take it over all by himself...I mean, what kind of band are you in when your lead singer will sometimes walk off a live set, start riots with the crowd, or not even appear at all? Claim rights to the band name and sue the other members for copyright infringement if they part ways?

The current GNR is nothing at all...I'm not sure if you could have GNR without Izzy or Matt or Duff, but you certainly can't have GNR without Slash...

Actually, it's more like "It could still be GNR as long as Axl isn't in the picture"...

Although many people don't like the genre, death metal groups are often comprised of extremely talented musicians. Take In Flames (one of the more accessible death metal groups) for example. They add melodic phrases to most of their songs and use a growl that is somewhat singing. The singer is talented, at least pitch wise and he has a good vocal tone. The guitar work is excellent.

Take another very popular dark metal band - Opeth. They use very intricate song structures combined with superb musicianship to produce a sound that, while still containg growling, is quite pleasureable to listen to.

There are many other talented groups. Please do not judge and condemn an entire genre of music simply upon the tendencies of a few mediocre bands.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

I have £1,000 tucked away for the "Westlife Split!" celebrations (sort of like VE Day). It'll involve cocaine, prostitutes and some of my favourite farmyard animals.

The Doves just came up on random, they don't have to split (as nobody noticed their last 2 albums).
