I couldn't see crap over the internet. I tried to load the video feed, but it didn't work at all. Oh well. One of these days I'll get a better connection.

From everything that I've read and heard about, it's a spectacular aircraft. Can't wait to fly on one.

The first day I've been out of the plant and what happens?

Quote:
GUNNISON COUNTY – A man was injured after the small plane he was flying crashed during take off on Wednesday morning.

The Gunnison County Sheriff's Office says the pilot was trying to take off from the Gunnison/Crested Butte Regional Airport at about 10:35 a.m. when his single engine Cessna experienced a "reduction in power."

Deputies say the aircraft experienced a hard landing and the right wing struck the runway.

The plane skidded for about 1,200 feet before finally coming to rest, deputies say.

Authorities say the pilot, who was the only one aboard, was transported to Gunnison Valley Hospital where he is undergoing treatment for back injuries.
I got a picture after the fact

I was watching a 737 doing touch and go's yesterday which is typically boring but this guy was doing last minute turns into pattern. It was awesome watching him just level out in time to touch his wheels

Is that some kind of practice maneuver?

QinetiQ is a British defence technology company, formed from the greater part of the former government agency DERA when it was split up in June 2001 (with the smaller part becoming Dstl). The Chief Executive at inception was the present day Chairman Sir John Chisholm. The current CEO is Graham Love. As a privatised company, QinetiQ is now one of the largest defence research organisations in the world and employs over 11,400 people.

QinetiQ solves defence and security problems that involve science and technology. For example, it made the semi-intelligent ultrasound scuba diver detector called Cerberus. The defence research sites that now form QinetiQ were previously involved in the invention of liquid crystal displays, the technology for one type of flat panel speakers, microwave radar, Chobham armour, and thermal imagers. In recent years QinetiQ has also developed software products, especially those for the defence and security industries. Examples include the "SURVIVE" vulnerability and recoverability assessment code[1]. SURVIVE was originally developed to assess the vulnerability of ships to weapon attack, but has been expanded to cover naval recoverability (damage control, firefighting, capability restoration), escape and evacuation and explosive safety and, in recent years, to cover tri-service vulnerability (aircraft, vehicles) and infrastructure (buildings, fortifications, etc.). In so doing it has become Europe's leading tri-service vulnerabiltiy assessment tool.

QinetiQ has a long term agreement (25 years) with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to manage military ranges. It is a major stakeholder in the UK Defence Technology Centre which places military research contracts on behalf of the MoD.
They've had a helo here for a week doing some sort of training or tests. Got this shot this morning from our plant as it hovered in place for a full 5 minutes

The company is also researching railguns and scramjets. If I knew where they were kicking it after class, I'd buy them a pint or two and tell them about the old days when we flew rubber band powered helicopters that had blades made of taffy.

Awesomeness.

Here are my latest shots. I took them a couple days ago with my little point & shoot camera at work.

DSCF1450.jpg

The first is an old Boeing 737-200. I'm actually quite glad I got a picture of it. Those are becoming more and more rare to see these days. The second and third shots are a C-17 Globemaster III. The last two shots are a KC-135 Stratotanker.

I was on a 767 landing in Lihue airport on the Kauai island of Hawaii. The airstrip there is so short that from the air I have trouble believing I could stop a car on it from 60 mph. The pilot slammed the aircraft down; almost felt like like a gearlesss belly landing, then hit the brakes almost hard enough to throw me into the seat in front of me. He couldn't turn the plane around without backing up once he stopped, because he was out of pavement. It was one of those "any live landing is a good landing" experiences. Luckily when we left the island on a smaller plane, it wasn't so scary, plus it was too dark to see how much strip we had left.

We got to take an hour chopper ride around the island, and that was a lot of fun - I was told the chopper was designed for tourism, but was later picked up by the LAPD for all the visability and ability to stay smooth when the wind currents/air masses changed. It had floor to ceiling windows, over top and underneath. I hope to post some pics soon - they're all on the laptop and I need to transfer to desktop. http://www.airkauai.com/ is the site.

I got this shot about five minutes ago. Sorry for the crappy quality. I took the picture with my phone since I don't have either of my cameras with me today.

^ what model is that giant jet?

I got the pics from the laptop of the chopper. It's about $440 per couple if you reserve through expedia or on the company web site. Despite how much of a cheapskate I normally, it was more than worth it.

The FAA makes you wear the floatation device on your waste before you get on, but it's an uninflated pouch that doesn't get in the way.

[EDIT]I thought I recognized the color scheme, is that designed to be Air Force One? And if so can I take a shot at it too?[/EDIT]

When I lived in PA, 3 of those C-130s used to fly low over our house about twice a month on routine maneuvers. They flew plenty low to make all the dogs bark and cows run for cover. They have a loud intimidating low-bass focused pitch sound and leave black trails of exhaust behind when flying. I can still remember as a kid hearing them coming well in advance and running outside to see them fly over. Your pic brings back a lot of memories of them.

I looked at Wikipedia but I'm still not sure what that thing does - is it meant to find high-flying aircraft?

Basically, it's a million-watt radar that can see everything from the surface of the Earth up to the edge of space.

It was pretty sweet to see the Blue Angels practice at our local airport a few years ago. Those guys are amazing.

We also had an Antonov An-124 fly in a few years ago. That, and a Concord at the same airport about nine years ago are about the only ones I can add to the list. Everything else (C-17, C-5, KC-135) has already been mentioned.

Here's a few of my latest shots. I took these less than two hours ago. C-5 Galaxy:

img_4960.jpg
img_4961.jpg
img_4962.jpg

I actually got about 200 various pictures of it before it left to head back to Memphis, TN. Most of the other shots weren't great because the sun was at a bad angle, but these three are probably the most dramatic, so I figured I'd post them. Right after these shots, I had put my wide-angle lens on, but he never made another pass, so I missed out on that one. I had this lens pulled all the way out (28mm) for these three shots, and I could still only get about half of the Galaxy in the frame... and it was about 400 feet above my head. o_o

Btw, this is where I was standing, facing 135° (SE).

Put +30° 25' 14.88", -89° 5' 20.40" into Google Maps and click Search.

[edit]
I guess the vB software doesn't like urls like that. Oh well. Copy+paste it is, then.

Avro Arrow. It was meant to be the fastest plane alive in 1959 having the ability to go Mach 2 at a 50 000ft + altitude.
