How does Digital Music work?

Hey people,

I'm Rom Manic, as you can tell, and I come here to Winamp.com's forums hoping that the members can answer a question of mine.

After all, what better place to come to for this sort of thing?

Anyways, the question is in the Topic Name, so I won't repeat myself. But if you're confused, I would like to know the basics of Digital Music, what types of channels there are, etc...

I'm a ROM hacker, and I have basic knowledge of how sound works on gaming consoles, but because it involves reverse enginnering a ROM to do so, it is no longer Streamed media. It is a Sequenced media, and thats all any ROM hacker will ever be able to see the music data as.

Hopefully, someone can help me out on the subject. Just E-mail me at the address in my profile, or contact me here.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks, Mr Jones. I completely forgot about Wikipedia, but alot of the references I wanted to know about in that article are incomplete or non-existant.

The article itself was great. The only trouble I had was technical references, such as compression algorithms like Pulse Code Mudulation and MDCT.

I got the basics of what they do, but math was never a strong point for me...And that formula for MDCT is a little bit over the top. The article doesn't really say what the variables in the formula represent, so I got a bit confused about that, and how it can be applied to compressing media.

Really I'm just looking on how to decompress the media, or the "Inverse transform", in an MP3 file, but another question I have now is this:

How can I analyze and isolate different sounds within an MP3 file?

Any other help is great. And Google just referenced me to a bunch of books, snake. Not much help as it usually is, surprisingly...
