You were right. I took all the RAM out, turned it on, it beeped six or seven times, I turned it off, put in a couple completely different sticks of 128MB, and now it works again.

I also managed to replace the 350Mhz Pentium II with a 500Mhz Pentium III.

Time to nLite a copy of XP Pro and see what this bad boy can do.

[edit]
I didn't feel like nLiting Windows, so I just put a pirated copy of WinXP Pro in it and hit Enter. This should be interesting.

As long as you kill themes you should be fine, especially with 256 of RAM....my toughbook is a PII 300 with 192 and runs XP Pro SP2 fine

It's almost done installing now. Seems like it's doing ok so far, but I need to put a couple fans on the CPU's heatsink. The P2 that came in it just had a big heatsink with a duct that connected to the fan in the PSU. Well, this P3 has a smaller heatsink that requires at least one fan, so right now, I've got the side panel off and a small desk fan blowing into it.

Yep, that board looks identical to the one in this Gateway. I've got a couple cooling fans around here somewhere, so I'll mount one of them to it in a bit. I finished installing XP Pro last night and customized a few settings on it (switched to Windows Classic, disabled all the effects, changed the colors). Seems pretty responsive so far, but I haven't really done anything with it yet.

SP2 yet? That will make it take a hit but i think that it is worth it because of the really bad exploits

Haha nice... Between my dad and I, we've got a bunch of systems. The majority are mine and are pretty old, though.

Mine:
Orpheon (Self-built)
HP Pavilion 504n
ADS Laptop
Gateway G6-350
Packard Bell Platinum 4440
Packard Bell Multimedia PB2100
Packard Bell Legend Supreme 1600
Packard Bell Legend 232
Compaq Proliant 4500
IBM L40 SX

Dad's:
eMachine T2642
Compaq SR1320NX
Compaq Presario 6000

These don't include the computers we've had in the past, either. Our first computer was a Commodore 64. I also used to have an HP Pavilion 6735 and an old Dell system (forget the model number, but it had an 800Mhz Pentium III). I might be forgetting one or two as well.

Well, I upgraded a few things on this Gateway since the other day. I added a cooling fan to the CPU (see attachment ), I added a second hard drive (30GB, too!), removed the internal modem and replaced it with a 10/100MBps NIC, and added one more 128MB RAM card (384MB total, now). I'll probably take the CD-ROM drive out and put a DVD-ROM drive in it for the hell of it, too.

I just got done installing SP2, Firefox, and Avast! on it a little bit ago as well. Seems to be doing pretty well so far. I didn't even have to install drivers for the NIC. Windows automatically recognized it, and I was online before I realized it.

I left it running overnight just to see if anything would happen to it. It's running rock solid. Not bad for a free computer, methinks.
