And what's this I hear about Intel chips running hotter than AMDs?

[edit]
And AMD-based systems are fine. Just make sure you keep it cool.

I burned a pentium up a while ago. The thing actually started flaming, but I think that was just dust or something like that.

This is from 2001. Afaik, AMD used to run hotter than Intel, but it's much better now.

Heh. I've done that to an AMD CPU.

What fool would remove the heat sink unless they wanted it to fail?

I've been using AMD processors for a long while now with no heat issues or any other hardware problems. Not gonna switch just because somebody demo'ed something that a little common sense could have told ya.

Yes, all it proves is older Intel CPUs have better thermal protection than older AMD CPUs did under abnormal circumstances.

Under normal conditions, the test means squat.

Well, yeah. And everyone knows that AMDs run hotter than most Pentiums (the new desktop Pentiums are an exception with the comparable 32-bit AMD chips, though), anyway.

There's not a huge problem with that. My A64 runs pretty hot, but it's in a Shuttle case so perhaps understandable.

I have an AMD 64 too... runs nice and cool. 96F system idle to light load. Pushing it hard, I have seen it rise to 105F. Just CPU fan + 2 PS fans + 2 case fans.

maybe for grins, I might run the CPU Stress program.

[edit]this is not the core temp... this is a sensor built in the CPU heat sink. [/edit]

My Athlon 64 4000+ runs pretty cool most of the time, too. Right now, it's running at 33c (91f). Under a good load, it might get up to 42c or 43c.
