recommended bitrate for full screen TV
hi, quick question, what bitrate would one use for LIVE high quality fullscreen tv encoding?
I want to broadcast a LIVE video stream from one location to another and ideally in full screen size and with high (near TV) quality, what encoding settings should I use? Thanks in advance |

That all depends ond your internet connection and the source of live stream. If this is just for your use you would want the highest possible bitrate. Also, x264 might be a good idea (but you'll need a good computer to encode that live, may want to stick with VP6). Definately you'll want AAC+ audio. As for the resolution you just need to pick what looks best to you. Do some tests with a live source and see how it looks to you. (Normal video resolution is 720x480, but the pixels aren't square so you'll want to go with 640x480)

Your probably looking at encoding video in excess of 1 meg for high definition, full screen display.
This would be pretty impractical, unless you plan on running this on a high speed Local Area Network or you have access to a Fiber Optic network connection. Scenic Television is your ambient window to the world - - www.ScenicTelevision.com |

hi, thanks for replies, not necessary high definition, but something that would be suitable to watch for a long time as if it was TV (not digital or satellite!)
I will try the VP6 and aac+ and see how i get on, where could i find more info on x264? thanks i intend to use it to make available to viewers within a wifi network, any ideas on limitations (the network is running at 22mbps) thanks |

If your intend on using wifi, you could set up the node for multicast and bandwidth wouldnt be a problem.
The viewers would need to load a winamp plugin to watch the multicast stream though, and you would need to convert your stream to multicast format. ( That would be easy. ) Scenic Television is your ambient window to the world - - www.ScenicTelevision.com |

You need to make sure that the wifi node you plan on using is multicast enabeled.
Like Slavas suggested, you could use Video Lan for both "transmitting" and "receiving". It is allready multicast enabeled. www.videolan.org Scenic Television is your ambient window to the world - - www.ScenicTelevision.com |

hi, im up and running (apart from the streaming over the wifi part, thats yet to come!) i have a question, hopefully someone may be able to help:
im currently testing my stream on VP7 and AAC+ and happy with the picture quality, its slightly pixelated, but that may be becuase the PC im testing it on isnt powerfull anough to encode at 640*480, so ive had to leave it at 320*240 for now, hence the pixelation i guess... the question is... on the capture part, i have some options that i dont undertand, wich compression should i choose and whats the diffrence? RGB 555 (16 bit) RGB24 YUY2 YUY9 I420 thanks any further info on the multicast node bit would be much appreciated someone mentioned videolan, but the version i have doesnt seem to be able to stream (which i know must be wrong! i guess is just cabt find it!) its verison 0.8.4a thanks! |

Since you're on a LAN and got spare bandwidth, you may aswell use mencoder (part of mplayer) or VideoLAN and just stream MPEG1, much easier to encode...
