winamp music / video
First the "Look for new Online Media Channels on exit" did a great job of erasing the winamp video listings. Now the 5.2 version mixes video and music with a genre only listing along with some adverts on the right of the browser.
1) who needs more adverts? finding newly featured videos used to be easy - 5.13 has the "date added" button 2) 5.13 also has sorting options - artist name, genre, bitrate 3) 5.13 has a little search field - you know where you can type things in and not have to know whether the artist you want to hear is considered genre "x" or genre "y" - sorting by genre differs according to who defined the genre - music shops, dj's, countries, etc. + some groups fall under at least 2 genres (even for the same song) or according to the particular song they play. Why are you so desperately trying to kill winamp video (does winamp or AOL hate their videos - i always thought they were great)? 4) 5.13 has even a "select by artist" window! - once again, that's what is on the right side of the 5.13 browser instead of the adverts - just want to rub it in a bit. It is obvious i loved winamp, wondered why winamp video / AOL wanted to kick the streams out of the listing and now why winamp 5.2 is delivering the final blow. i am starting to get anoyed by the stupid little window at the starting of the great winamp 5.1x (anything under 5.2 actually) telling me to DOWNGRADE to 5.2x Keep it up and winamp will be even worse than the rest of the players available - until 5.2 i actually never even looked at R..., Q..., MP..., etc. Last edited by jandersonjohn; 9th April 2006 at 22:05. |

Do new additions actually still appear in the old listing? Just wondering...
If you don't want to upgrade and want to get rid of the popups... Prefs (Ctrl+P) > General Preferences > 'Check for new version of Winamp at startup' Though chances are the old listings will stop working one day... |

It's possible that new additions will stop or have stopped already. That's the way to force people to take it or leave it. This attitude already made me decide to dump quite a few programs (software), never to regret what I may have lost.
As to the point you mentioned, the adverts in 5.2x are for a newly FEATURED song and video. This does not mean that the "featured" stuff is also the newst material added to the database or streaming server(s). Furthermore, how can you tell whether or not new additions are being made under 5.2x. You only get folders with the genres (then you wait a bit for the list to load) and then the names of the groups (note: if you are so lucky as to pick the right genre in the first place, you'll find the group your looking for and hope that your song has been categorized in that genre). There is absolutely NO information as to when the stream was added. I like(d) winamp. It would be unfortunate to see a good thing die. Why is it not possible to include the good from 5.13 in 5.2? Thanks for the tip with the update popup. Nevertheless, that's the least of my winamp problems :-( Last edited by jandersonjohn; 10th April 2006 at 01:00. |
